Stranded!

Need some help now. We are at the Grand Canyon. The bolts for the rear brake caliper are gone! Both bolts have worked loose and are gone. The rear brake is just hanging there. We have the caliper pulled back out of the way right now with a zip tie. No fluid is leaking, as both the rear pads are compressed together and all the internal parts are intact. It is now late Saturday night 8-23-08. We had planned to see the Canyon tomorrow and then head to Las Vegas, see Hoover Dam and spend some time in Vegas and then to CCR on Tuesday. Any one out there have any spare parts, especially those bolts? Thanks for the assistance.

My cell is 770-331-8155 - call if you can help.

Re: Stranded!

Ray,

Not sure if this will help, but per the parts fiche, at least one of the caliper bolts is showing as a M10 x 26. You may be able to find a high-grade replacement bolt (probably will find a M10 x 25) at a local hardware store, that can get you by until you can get to a dealer.

I'm thinking these might not be a part that a dealer will stock (as they're not that common a replacement), but am hoping otherwise for you.

Good luck!

Re: Stranded!

Also try at some of the auto parts stores, or an auto salvage yard you might luck out there and put a drop or two of BLUE loctite on the beginning threads of the bolts when installed it will help keep them from backing out again....good luck. Sounds like a nice trip except for the trouble.

Re: Stranded!

Talked with Ray this morning, he was enjoying the Grand Canyon view,
he's able to ride the LT just no rear brakes.

Here's a couple of pics of the bolts you need,
(these are from my 02 LT) they are both one inch long with a 1/4" shoulder,
the forward one has an "affixed" washer and the rear one has a removable washer, I cannot see an advantage for either style.
The threads measure 18 threads per inch, I don't have a metric thread gauge but there is a -.072 on the same gauge.
The diameter of both bolts is 25/64 using a drill bit gauge that converts to .3906 metric for reference 10mm is .3937, so that's probably what they are.
A decent hardware store or marine center should have what you need, if not these are just a phone call away.

Re: Stranded!

OK, now that we've established you should be fairly able to get some replacements...

Why did these fall out.. That just usually doesn't happen unless they weren't properly tightened in the first place...Did you do your own brake service or did someone else try to kill you...? Inquiring minds want to know.

Put a little blue loctite on the new ones to be for sure for sure.

Re: Stranded!

Torque the new bolts to 40NM (30 ft-lbs).

I just passed through that area in an un-airconditioned Jeep Cherokee (my son's) two weeks ago.

I've got to go back on the LT - when it's a little cooler!

Good luck.
