Exclamation Check your rubber valve stems. RECALL !!

I had several that seperated between the threaded brass part and the rubber and assumed it was caused by the high heat on the rear wheel of the LT. Now I run across this recall. Mine were replaced a while back with chrome stems, now I am really glad I did it.

You all may want to watch your rubber stems careful, since you can not tell who made yours without removing the tire.

Re: Check your rubber valve stems. RECALL !!

I wonder if I could blame my final drive failure on a recalled valve stem and get it replaced.

Re: Check your rubber valve stems. RECALL !!

The failure mechanism of the recalled stems is different than the separation some have experienced. The defective stems are cracking near the base.

In either case, good cause to switch to thread-in stems instead.

I wonder if more than 4% of them had failed before the NHTSA opened their investigation.

Those must have been on my utility trailer rims as they were less than a year old when the spare tire stem just fell off. Metal forever!

Re: Check your rubber valve stems. RECALL !!

I had a flat on the rear a couple of months ago during a poker run here. It went flat just as I was coming off a side road and getting onto a main road. All of a sudden the bike got squirrely and I pulled over. The rear tire was flat but I couldn't find anything in the tire. I had it hauled in and they said the valve stem in the tire broke. That's a first for me. It cost me $104 for the tow and stem replacement................

Re: Check your rubber valve stems. RECALL !!

You should always replace the valve stem with every tire change.
When you check your tire preasure and bend the stem to get the guage on it, you are actually weakening the bond between the rubber and the brass.

When I change friends tires, I always install steel stems on their bikes.
It is actually cheaper in the long run.
Rubber stem is .37 bulk
Steel stem is .45 bulk
It does take more weight to balance the wheel, but my friends safety is worth it.

_ Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time, but always enough time to do it over?

Re: Check your rubber valve stems. RECALL !!

I had the brass portion separate from the stem last year. Replaced both with new tires recently and, as common sense would dictate, will replace with each tire change from now on!

Good thing the separation occurred while parked at home and not in the boondocks between Taylor and Hearne!
