Should I only use the central stand?

Thanks to this forum I was not surprised and too concerned when I saw smoke when starting my LT after she stayed on the side stand. However that makes me worried about possible long term damage to the bike. It is obviously not good for and engine to keep swallowing and burning oil all the time even in small quantity. It may also be a problem for the catalytic exhaust. So my question is, how many of you only park their LT on its central stand and should I only use the central stand?

Re: Should I only use the central stand?

To dramatically reduce the smoke on startup:

When shutting down the motorbike, Lean the bike toward the right and count to 10; then lean it on the side stand.

A few seconds long may be required for your bike.

The goal is to drain the top end oil to the oil pan instead to the top end of the cylinders where it can slide by the rings and seals.

Re: Should I only use the central stand?

I hardly ever use the center stand and always thought that BMW put them on for maintenance purposes. I do, however, keep the bike upright after turning it off, for about the time it takes to remove gloves and unbuckle the helmet, so the oil drains into the pan. If I do that, no smoke the next time I start her up.

I'm sure many will use only side or center depending on many things...
I for one use the center stand 99% of the time. Coming from riding and working for HD for the past 27 years, I had been accustom to the "locking" side stand. Once you put it down, it locks in place and will not give way, in the dealership we could push the bikes around the showroom while on the side stands.
The BMW does not lock in place, so, you would have to leave the bike in gear, let it roll forward and "lock" it in place this way.
I just don't like the amount of lean angle the bike has on the side stand, I like the security I "feel" from my LT being on the side stand. The only time I will leave mine on the side stand for any time is while getting gas and if the ground is not level. Other than that, it will always stay on the center stand.

The center stand because it's powered so i don't have to do a thing except push a button. Greatest thing since the invention of the wheel

To quote Hollywood. "I use the center stand 99% of the time. for one use the center stand 99% of the time.

I just don't like the amount of lean angle the bike has on the side stand, I like the security I "feel" from my LT being on the side stand. My thoughts exactly. I am 6 ft 205lbs., so I always put the centerstand down and stand on the peg and she comes right up. Once I got the hang of feeling the center stand level her out before I step on the peg. Its beem center stand every since.

Ride 'em if you got 'em.

Re: Should I only use the central stand?

Very simple, short term parking, side stand. Long term center stand. Do not sweat the small stuff.

Re: Should I only use the central stand?

I always use the side stand. Do what ppl here said - wait a few seconds before turning off the bike.

Its a really small amount of oil burning, classic for BMW. I've never heard of it causing any issues.
