Question Final Drive ID Question

This is a picture of a drive donated for rebuild for a CCR tech session.
Who can tell me if this drive is off a K1200LT and if so, what years?

What has me confused is the opening for a sensor on the side of the drive housing. Early KLT drives had a hole for a speedo sensor on the top of the housing, this hole disappeared in later models when the speedo sensing was incoorporated into the ABS sensor (at least that's what I think I know about it). But this drive has a hole I don't recognise and I suspect it maybe off a different model.

Re: Final Drive ID Question

I can FOR SURE it is not off the early 99-01 LT, the Sensor location you have circled is not at that location on those years.

Re: Final Drive ID Question

It is not an LT unit either, maybe an RS? The brake caliper mount is on the top. But it is most likely the same on the INSIDE.

Re: Final Drive ID Question

I've had a brief look on here, hoping I'd find it. Doesn't match any of the LT's I looked at.

K1100LT, looks very similar.

Re: Final Drive ID Question

Forcing me to stretch the brain cells a bit.............
Seems I remember one that looks just like that one that was on an R1100RT.
IIRC the hole was for the ABS sensor.
Not sure about the internals but seem to remember the gear ratio is different.

Re: Final Drive ID Question

I can't see if it has the speedo sensor port but it looks like a boss where it should be but the port your looking at is the speedo/abs I think. I first thought it was the lower shock mount of the 97 and earlier LT but no. It could be the oil head RT/RS or possibly the GS.
Check the FD gear ratio which is stamped on the housing that will narrow it down to which model and (older) that it really is. That is a tough one.

It most probably has our 19 ball crown bearing though!

Cool Re: Final Drive ID Question

Hey Charlie, I may have an '00 LT Final Drive unit to offer up for a rebuild depending on the verdict this weekend.

My rear wheel has excessive play so I dropped the Bike off at the dealer last night to get their opinion (mainly since they had re-sealed this very drive just barely over 2 years ago.) I am hoping if it is the drive that I can get a break on the cost of replacement. Maybe a "Good Will" thing? We'll see.

But if they can't help on the cost, and it is the rear drive, I guess I had better start shopping for one!

Whether they replace it, or I try to do it on my own, if it is the final drive I do hope to have one that would be a good candidate for a rebuild, so stay tuned. The drive that is possibly the source of my problems is one that I had installed by Big Twin BMW in Boise while on the road in late 2005 on the way to CCR, so it is not as old as the Bike!

Fingers crossed,

John

Re: Final Drive ID Question

Well the concensus opinion is that it is a RT drive. Still not sure what model.

Not sure what I will do with that one.

I have enough "material" to make my CCR final drive rebuild video so I don't need any more final drives for that purpose.

I am willing to rebuild a final drive for someone but at this point all costs will need to be assumed by the owner of the drive. Shipping both ways, bearing, seal, and shims.

Cool Re: Final Drive ID Question

Sold! Maybe. The Final Drive rebuild that is. Still have not heard back from the dealer, and may not know for sure before Tuesday. But, if I need to replace the final drive I may want to talk to ya Charlie. Do you currently have one available for the '00 LT? And if so what would I need to do to put it to use?

Just thinking ahead in case I have the worst case scenario here: Failed Rear Drive and no dealer support! I'm hoping that won't be the case.

John,
I do have a drive for a 2000 ready to go. I do want to have a 2000 rebuilt are ready for shipping before we leave for CCR in mid Aug. But there is time for you to ship me your old drive and for me to rebuild it. I could ship you this drive if you get yours to me soon. PM me if interested.

Red face Re: Final Drive ID Question

I may have lucked out on this one Charlie. The dealer seems to think that the Rear Drive is not the cause of the play! They say it appears to be the Paralever Bearings. Not sure if it is the front or rear set, or both, but it is better than a new Rear Drive this close to CCR!

So it looks like I was premature in my diagnosis, but should find out for sure this Tuesday hopefully.

Tks for being available for all of us needy LT'ers out here anyway Charlie! It really is like knowing that there is a form of insurance available for the group and that is a great thing!
