K12LT died

hello guys,

newbie to the LT forum, but been around KRS for many years.

I am hoping for some advice or BTDT's on a dead 2002 K12LT a guy brought to my shop, have scanned FAQ's, just registered now so I'll dig the search function.

bike is 02 KLT, rider came home from a 1k weekend of flawles operation, next time he got on bike starter turns it over well, does not start. Trailers bike to me to get it running

symptoms- no fuel pump runs when key switched on (I am "assuming" its like my RS where the FP pressures up when key is switched on).

no 12vdc to either side of fuse that manual shows as "fuse #4 , Motronic, fuelpump, diagnosis 15A"

have checked sidestand and clutchlever interlocks, and keyfob alarm on/off.

any ideas appreciated

Re: K12LT died

How about the kill switch? Is the engine turning over or is it just the starter motor turning? If just the starter it could be the Sprague clutch assembly not working.

Re: K12LT died

Fuse F4 is fed directly from the battery so I would trace the wire back from the fuse to the tie point.

JZ,

good bit of info there, that will be my starting point!

HP,

don't think its Kill Switch related, engine turns over normally when start button is pressed, but with no 12vdc to fuse #4 it has no power to fuel pump or FI computer.

I have really never fooled much with touring type motorcycles----with radio, CD player, cruise control, alarm system, and totally encased in tupperware this thing rivals the the space shuttle in complexity

Re: K12LT died

Well if no power to the fuse, I'd suggest just making a quick test by feeding power (fuse if if desired) directly to the output side of the fuse to see if the fuel pump turns on and if the motorcycle would start. If it starts, you know you found your problem. Otherwise you have more than one problem to fix.

Can't add much to what the other fellows said.

But will say welcome aboard fellow Tar Heel.

Good Luck and let us know what you find.

BTW, it looks like fuse 3 gets it's power from the same point as fuse 4. Fuse 3 is for the alarm. Verify power there, yes or no may help you narrow down the possible break in the conductor if a break exists.

Do you have power anywhere else on the bike?

John,

thanks for the info and the welcome.

with key in 'on' position I have power on both sides of all the 15a fuses in the 3 fuse boxes EXCEPT no power on either side of fuse #4 of RH fusebox.

I don't have K-LT wiring diagrams, I do have first gen. K12RS wiring diags. and am 'fishing' it now. I am concerned that with all the systems the LT has there is something more between the #4 fuse and batt. that may be 'open' and causing this problem. will know more in the morning when I get out to the shop.

all other funtions on the bike work normally AFA I can determine, but motor turns over, does not run.

you LT guys really get out and ride 'em don't ya, I need to hook up and go on some rides when the AMA season is over.

I'll take my Clymer to work. If you need a schematic page faxed, I can try and do that if it will help. The Clymer schematics aren't as good as the BMW diagrams, but better than nothing.

Let me know here.

Mike,

On the factory diagrams there is a tie point for all unswitched 12V and the signal is called 30U. That is the only thing listed between the battery and fuse F4. This tie point feeds several relays and Fuses F3, F5 & F7 as well. Good luck.

John,

you've anticipated my question even before I asked! The 97-01 K12RS diag. shows that same tie point to its fuse 4.

I checked her out this morning, made up a jumper to power the line side of fuse4 and switched the key on. Heard that familar fuel pump spinover and then hit the button, started immediately.

the only possible answer is there is a break in the red wire that feeds from 30U to f4.
There is another unswitched red wire feeding f3, that I've jumped to and ridden the bike.

on riding I got ABS fault (alt. flashing between triangle and brake failure lites), opened the seats to find the diag. plug/read codes and find a blank hole on Pin 2....duh, guess thats IABS.....

quick search on this site and I learn bike has fliud level sensors, a spoon full of DOT4 turned off the triangle and a roll out turned off the BF indicator.

now that I am back to 'operational' I will strip the plastic and do the annual service on this bike.

my thanks to all the contributors on this site, there is a wealth of info here....

Just for fun, make sure the reverse lever is fully engaged in the forward position. This has happened to me right after some maintenance. Bike cranks but no giddeup.
