Well guess what? Yes you are right, another newbie here. This is one heck of a site. I have already found very interesting information so far just in the couple of days reading.
I just bought my first BMW bike
yesterday. It is a 1999 K1200LT custom gold in color. I think I got a pretty good deal. The bike runs great, driven less than 100 miles on two new tires, a battery, brakes and oil change. It was done 6 months ago though. I Paid $6000. Does this seem like a descent deal? It only has 29,000k miles, thought that was some-what low for a 99. Thatís less than 4k miles a year.
He even threw in two helmets that (he said) cost over $1500 for both. They have speakers or intercom system in the helmets. He did say that the bike was not equipped with the intercom system (his previous bike did have this before it melted) so the helmets will not work unless you install a system. How much would something like this run? Could I install it? I am very handy at electrical. He also gave me two rains suits less than 6 months old. He said he spent close to $300 for each set, dang man really? I find it hard to believe they cost that much, but he said they were very good suits.
The only thing wrong with it is that the windshield is bad. Itís all in tact it is just you can not see out of it that well. Donít know if it is because of sitting up, the sun, heck just donít know, so I need to get a windshield first thing. I have seen several posts about windshields but still am unclear which route to go. I called BMW of Atlanta. They had one for $249 standard. Do they have aftermarket? Is it worth an aftermarket windshield or will I regret it in a couple of years? Also, I did not know you could just about get several sizes smaller. Why? Is it for different peopleís heights? I have not got to sit/ride on the bike but once. So I really need to see where my eyesight is at on the factory one installed. I am 6í2Ē (inseam 34Ē). If I remember correctly itís like I had to lower the windshield so I could see over it to drive (been 3 months since i had drove it). I believe that is how I would like it, to be able to use the windshield when I wanted it and also to lower it to enjoy the ride.
The only other thing is that the CD changer does not work either. Donít know whatís wrong with it either, mostly because I do not have the bike yet (get it Monday). If it needed to be replaced would it have to be a factory changer? Could I find several that would fit in its place that would work?
Right off the bat I have $400 to spend. About $250 on the windshield, that leaves about $150. So CD changer, BMW cup holder, low beam light kit? Is there something else that I will need the $150 for? What could this $150 be spent on that it would benefit the best on right away. I plan on adding stuff later just when all that money starts coming in (HA!).
I pick the bike up Monday. The bike was my dads!!!! So ok yes that explains the good deal (heck I hope it is a good deal). The reason why he is selling it? He had a car wreck six months ago that messed him up bad. So he is not able to ride anymore.
I have been riding for about 10 years just not a BMW. First bike was an 89 Goldwing, then a 2004 Kawasaki Vulcan 800. I havenít ridden in about one and a half years now. And I canít wait. I feel like a kid a week before Christmas knowing what he has got but has to wait to open it up! Sounds perverted but I get excited reading all the posts, makes me want to take off work and drive on up there and get my bike already.
Well I have several, more questions but will hold off for now. I have probably already asked too many and am about to get band on my first day here (LOL).
Take care and great forum.
