Ohlins Install Question

I just ponied up for a set of Ohlins. Im taking it to the dealer to get installed and want to get an idea of how many labor hours should they charge. It amazes me the different numbers I get when I call for a quote.

Thanks,

Re: Ohlins Install Question

Jim,
It depends if your dealer uses a flat rate or actual time spent. I bet a super fast tech could do it in 4 hours, But most likely 6-8 hours. I would invite your local LT riders over for a tech session and supply beer and pizza!

Re: Ohlins Install Question

I agree on the 3/4 hours if they have changed a front shock before, more if they havenīt.

If you do get the dealer to do it, and depending on the miles done, get them to change the air and fuel filters whilst they are at it.

Re: Ohlins Install Question

BMW Denver quotes flat rate of 3 hours for rear shock and 9 hours for front shock.

WTH? At $95/hour (BMW Columbus' labor rate), that's over a thou... uh, wait, it's $12xx.... a lot of money!

Jim, keep us informed, as I'd like to go this route also -- but not for that kind of labor charge.

Re: Ohlins Install Question

No way is it going to take a trained BMW mechanic with all the right tools 12 hours to change both shocks, unless they are charging you hours for a helper.

yeah- I didnt quite expect that. I figured about 4-5 hours (2 hrs front/2 hrs back and 1 hour to find all the fairing screws). This might be a job for a tech day request. $95/hour - thats the same price as my car dealer charges. I guess if you cant do it - you gotta pay for it.

Re: Ohlins Install Question

We replaced Uncle Rock's shocks in about 3 hours at one of Howard's tech sessions. I'll do it again for some Guinness and pizza . . . surely.

Yeah, but didnt you leave out some bolts and not tighten others? We found a couple of other things laying on the ground after his test ride. Misc nuts/bolts. brake fluid, etc...? Now that I think about it... we havent heard much from Uncle Rock.

You have a certain (unknown) amount of time during which you can delete a post. After that, groveling with the admins may work.

Re: Ohlins Install Question

I just held a tech session at my house and invited some friends over. Pulled the tupperware off and swapped both shocks in an afternoon, as well as helping install some horns, doing a valve check, and installing a couple of HID upgrades on a few other bikes.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Talking Re: Ohlins Install Question

I helped my friend Jose Pinero, he had to buy craft beer, not the cheep stuff and coffee early on. We did front and rear in 5 hours which included all of the tupperware. We had 2 screws left over and Jose just figured out they belong to the insturment panel. All was good and ride significantly better, seal blown on front shock.
