Fuel level

I have been noticing lately that my fuel gauge (2002) isn't reading right, it reads lower than the actual fuel level. When I filled up last (on side stand) it was reading a hair above the white area at the bottom of the gauge and only took 3.6 gallons to fill.
I searched but all I came up with was the opposite problem, induced by the dented sender tube.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Or is the tank such an odd shape that the sender can't give a linear reading?

Re: Fuel level

My fuel gauge always reads lower then it really is. I pretty much use the miles to empty on the BC to indicate how much fuel I have left.

I can have 100 miles left and the fuel gauge shows below an 1/8 of a take.. I have just lived with it.

The other thing you may wish to try, is when the gas hose shuts off during fill, little by little top it off until you can actually see the fuel at the top of the fill opening.

I regularly get approx. 300 miles per tank or more and use that as the gauge. I usually ignore the fuel gauge altogether.

I do that also and my 2002 gage will show full when I leave the station but after two miles it is under the full mark. I cannot get 300 miles on a tank but 250-270 is doable and I also use the BC and fuel light to let me know when to fill up.

Re: Fuel level

My gas gauge is off by 1/4 and the BC corresponds to the gauge. So I ust go by the tripometer for my gauging the fuel distance. I get approx 250 mies to the tank. I am still debating whether to replace the float bowl ass'y or just let it go. I am leaning towards replacing it as I like my bike to work 100%.
