What to pack for a trip??

You guys are the Guru's of the roadways. This might be considered a short hop for some of you but I'm planning a ride that is 6hrs one way. Total of 4 day long lil get away for the wife and I. A maiden voyage, if you will, on my 2000LT. As a newbee to touring is there a quick list of things I should take? It is funny how small the bags seem to be when the wife starts to load for a day trip to Bike Week.
I want to take layers of clothing to cover the temperature changes, and light rain suits just in case. We plan to wear the full face helmets, boots and gloves. I have a full tool kit, GPS, kick stand pad, flash light, spray windshield cleaner, and a few of those little chemical warmers that heat up when opened(for the wife should we hit cold riding).
Any help here would be greatly appreciated......

Re: What to pack for a trip??

The only thing i can say is that I always take to much! The last couple of trips have been better. I changed to wearing UnderArmor and now put clothes in bags and sqeeze the air out of them to reduce the size. One of the guys I ride with a back-packing guy who knows how to pack everything and keep it small and light, he has helped me learn all about micro-fiber stuff.

I know I do not have enough time to get the bag liners but that sounds like a good thing to have too.

Re: What to pack for a trip??

6 hours one way is not a long ride, unless you and your wife have never ridden for at least two hours on the LT. At 2 hours, you will know if the seat is uncomfortable for you, or if the gear you wear will leave you too hot or too cold.

The gear I take is dependent on the expected weather over the course of the trip. During the summer, I normally take my firstgear Meshtex jacket for the hot california valleys and my FirstGear Kilimanjaro Jacket for rain and cool mountain conditions. My mesh pants have a removable liner for warmth and rain.

Thumbs up Re: What to pack for a trip??

Are you going North, South or West? My list is short. Cash, credit cards, insurance cards, tow service card, Anonymous Book, spare key and a copy of all of the above hidden under the trunk liner. For 4 days you need 4 changes (that gives you 1 spare in case you get stuck or wet) of sox, underwear and shirts, something to sit around in and comfortable shoes while the boots cool off. Keep it simple, and light. I wear waterproof clothing with removable liners so I don't need rain gear. If it's not too cold, wet gloves will dry while you ride. If it's cold, a spare pair is nice and I found rain gloves and winter gloves are too bulky so I have glove liners for cold weather and a spare pair for wet days. If it is real cold, pack a sweat shirt. My Motoport suit will handle weather down to about 40 with just a T shirt. Learn about Microfiber clothing (Columbia fishing shirts and zip off pants and Under Armor shirts). They pack small and dry fast. Take a digital camera. Take pictures so you can remind your wife of the fun she forgot you had! Tools are great as is a tire repair kit and air compressor, but, if you don't know what your doing, they won't help. Keep smiling, everyone is jealous of people having fun!

Re: What to pack for a trip??

I sheepishly admit that I own the worlds best touring bike but have not taken it riding for more than 1hr at a time. This will be a new experiance!
I do have the summer riding down to a science also riding with a mesh jacket. It is the cool/cold riding and the distance away from friends with trailers that concerns me. I knew some of you would consider 6hrs one way a evening cruise but for us this is baby steps. I did purchase a sheepskin covered gel pad to slow down the numb a$$.

Thank you for any info you got to make this a more enjoyable ride!

Craig,
You're right down the road south of us! Thanks for the reply!

Take water bottles and a few power bars or some snacks.
Stop and look at whatever once in a while.............
Karen and I like 2 lanes (less stress) and stop about every 1-1/2 hrs to stretch.
relax, enjoy........the destination is a small part of it...it's about the ride.

I ride up there a lot as some of my friends moved to Deland and my brother lives in Melbourne. I rode up a few weeks ago for breakfast. 3 hours, 210 miles.

I've been looking at the map. Looks like we got many ways to travel. Prob will take some 2 laners and kick it slow. We took a ride across to Deland 2 weekends ago and it was a blast. Taking I95 would be quicker but not as relaxing! Besides I take I95 EVERY time in the car. We should live a lil! And since we do not have our comm headsets it is a screaming match talking at speeds in a full face helmet.

Re: What to pack for a trip??

1-gal bags are just right, I take 3 sets of under-armor with me now no matter how long i am gone. 1 set to ride in, at the end of the day wash them out let them dry over night (they dry fast) i also take a mesh bag to dry things on the go also, you could get away with one I guess, I usually wear the second set the next day and wash them that afternoon and the third is just a spare and this I have found is plenty. I also use BMW socks they are the best I have ever tried. Then I bring a light jacket, a sweat shirt, a couple of nice t-shirts and a pair of Levis. I bring a pair of light hiking boots and a pair of sandels. I use a small micro fiber towel when camping. One thing i learned from my hiking buddy is to bring a head-lamp flashlight this is great for camping or working on your bike. I can get all this in one of the side bags easy. One thing I have learned is where to put things, in the packing order so you can get to them without unpacking your whole bike on the side of the road. Like stuff you may want to get to like rain gear, if you going to put it in one of the side bags use the one on the right so if you have to pull over and put her on the side stand the case lid id tilted up so things don't fall out as you open it, and your on the safest side of the bike in regards to traffic. If you have moved your top case back to the rear setting this creates a gap between the back of your rear seat and the case perfect for tent poles or a bike cover or what ever will fit most people never even notice it. Do a practice pack also go out a few days before and pack your bike ride it around the block to see how it feels to. Take your time and have fun this is addicting you know!
