Question Need advice - windscreen no workee

Embarrassing moment today telling prospective buyer of my 2002 LTE how everything on the bike was in perfect condition. Then... The windscreen does not function at all. I use it all the time and used it just the day before when washing the bike. Had the charger hooked up in the past week and only ridden the bike a few miles.

When I hit the button.. nothing. I'm thinking fuse? I'm wondering if a failing motor would show sign of fatigue before going completely out?

Also... what is the new motor replace cost.

Thanx for any thoughts or advice...

Re: Need advice - windscreen no workee

Chris,

did you try to assist the windscreen manually when pressing the adjuster button? Sometimes the joints get so stuck that the screen only moves with manual assistance and then you have to spray some lubricant in the joints. I would start with this.

In ´05 and newer bikes the fuse is nr. 1 (15 Amp) and it is common with the power sockets. Perhaps the fuse is different in older models.

Then there is the possibility of a faulty windshield relay. This is located right under the instrument cluster cover (under the windshield).

I am 99% sure that your motor is OK. It is quite ridgid. How do I know? Well I have one as a seat adjuster...

Sure hope you're right Ari... I checked the arms of the mechanism and lubed them... they are free and clear. Is the relay hidden and I need to take out the dash or is there another way to get in there to check it?

The relays and motor are under the dash, pretty easy to remove,

first remove the windshield then the 7 screws that hold the cover behind the windshield,
six of the screws are easy to find the last one is behind the maplight.

Thumbs up Re: Need advice - windscreen no workee

Hans and Ari... you were right on. Turns out it was the fuse. I am a dumb a$$ when it comes to wrenching. After tearing the windshield and dash out and checking the connections and relays... i thought maybe its that little fuse. I'm sure there is some sort of mechanic rule to check the simple thing first. At least I learned how to take apart the dash and windshield. That's the first "work" of any kind i've ever done myself.

Hans... the 7th screw in the maplight? I scratched my head for an hour on that one ... and finally realized there's no maplight on my dash because that's where the mount arm for the GPS runs. I would have never found the 7th screw and never gotten the dash out without you and this site.

cheers.

Cool Re: Need advice - windscreen no workee

I was told to:
1. Check the easiest first
2. Fix/replace the cheapest
Have to admit I don't always follow the rules.

Re: Need advice - windscreen no workee

Reminds me of......

Back in my HD days
we were all to meet at Bart's house to go riding,
get there and he's got parts of his knucklehead all over the driveway.
rear cylinderhead is off, he's going on about needing a valve job,
dammn thing won't start.

Guess we ain't going for a ride today

So being good and supportive friends we help him put parts in the garage,
I pick up the gas tank and say: did you drain all the fuel out?

no F --- in way !!! ................ and many more explatives deleted

It's been 30 years and he's still embarrassed,
of course being his friend its my job to "remind" him every once in a while

ouch.. friend's brother just 'rebuilt' his bike... so we are out putting some miles on it for him.. =)...

Next thing I know, he's slowing down in front of me... I can't see a problem... "probably just a flashback" I say in my mind... but he's stopping now..

We get stopped off the road and I say, "You okay?" he sez, "yeah, bike started to run out of gas so I flip it to reserve and it QUITS!!!"...

Turns out when he rebuilt the bike and cleaned the petcock, he put the little plastic diverter in backwards....

His brother sez.. "yeah, I put it like that in case of theft.... I never leave much gas in the bike... so when they try to leave, they won't get to the gas station before it runs out of fuel."...

Pays to know your bike.
