Not necessarily so Andy. I ran a 70 watt low beam bulb for nearly two years before I upgraded to low beam HID, and kept an 85 watt high beam in place for over 4 years, never had any problem with the reflector.
85 watt high beam seemed to be OK since high beam is not usually on for long lengths of time, the 70 watt low beam I would consider the upper limit, since I had no problems, but a couple of people who tried 85 to 100 watt low beam bulbs did destroy the reflectors.
I surely do recommend HID though, instead of higher wattage bulbs, which only marginally help. My 85 watt high beam bulb looked like a yellow candle in comparison to the 35 watt HID low beam!
