Brake fluid flush

I took all my tupperware off the LT to prepare for brake, clutch, and coolant flushing. I found what I believe to be the ABS pump behind the left side battery cover.

What puzzles me is the ABS pump bleed screws. It appears that one is recessed in the vertical side facing out the left side of the bike. How can you get a tool on that screw, and with a hose on it?

The other is on the rear of the pump at approximately 45 degree angle up pointing rearward. I can see getting a tool on that but not easily.

The pictures in my Clymer book do not match what I see on the bike so would like some reassurance that I'm seeing this correctly.

Re: Brake fluid flush

Joe,
Some place in the Halls of wisdom there is a brake bleed procedure with fairly detailed pictures. I am not computer savvy enough to know how to post a link though.

I have bled the brakes on my 02 doing this and it was fairly straight forward procedure. If you don't get any other responses stating how to find the procedure. Send me a PM. I think I have them saved on my computer and could e-mail them to you.

Try this link. It is for the EVO/linked brakes.

I found that later last night! The screws I found are for the pump itself and I probably don't want to mess with that!

Thanks!

Re: Brake fluid flush

There are two circuits one control and one wheel each for front and rear. The nipple on the side is for the cross port bleed between the two control circuits and contains very little fluid and can be skipped for a flush. I would bleed it only if air was introduced in the control circuit. They moved it up to the top on the 05 and up units.

The wheel circuits are more critical to flush as they are "stressed" more than the control circuits. But I would still consider flushing the control circuits if they have not been done in the last couple of years. They are flushed through those fittings on the ABS unit.

Re: Brake fluid flush

Hi.

Could someone confirm that these instructions are valid, or not, for a 2005 LT ?.

Re: Brake fluid flush

Simon,

Yup the orientaion of the rear caliper is different and our ABS unit is a little more hidden than this one is but it will work. I have an addendum to Mark Neblett's article for the pre 05's that shows some picturesof the 05 stuff in the "Files" section under "technical" if you want to look at that.

I never bothered to unbolt the calipers to level them, but I did push the pistons fully back and held them back with some cut up pieces of an old plastic cutting board. It is not all that hard to do and the funnel he uses works very well. Just don't run the reservoirs dry and induce air as they empty rapidly with the hi level on the servos.
