Broken windshield arm retaining pin holder on the plastic mount

Does this seem like a reliable, long term fix for a broken windshield arm retaining pin holder on the plastic mount? Anyone else have this happen? It doesn't appear that the plastic piece that holds the pin/spring down is meaty enough to do its job for the long haul.
I also have not been able to find a used replacement mount without all the other stuff attached. What a PITA it will be to change out the mount.

I needed to drill an additional hole as a lower feed through for the tie-wrap and used an existing hole for the top feed through.

I tried to imbed this pic from here:

Re: Broken windshield arm retaining pin holder on the plastic mount

I attempted to add an image for the first time, but somehow failed. I've edited the original post with the link.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Jerry, try pinging Tony (www.ltparts.com). He saved my bacon when I bent my front wheel in a huge pothole. I am sure he has the part you need, probably still attached to one of the bikes he is parting out.

I did check out Tony's website (I've bought from him even before he started parting bikes out in ernest) and found a fully loaded frame for $400. I thought maybe a $0.20 tie-wrap might work as well as a used plastic frame. Seems like that little finger that holds the arm pin is less than optimal.

Someone here drilled holes on either side and put U-bolts to hold in place.

Re: Broken windshield arm retaining pin holder on the plastic mount

Jerry, here are a couple of links to fixes that others have tried. The first is the one that cfell mentioned above:
http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthre...ght=windshield

Near the end of this thread dshealey suggested the zip tie solution that you have used. The next thread shows a fix that I cobbled together. It is still holding fine after about 12k miles, and I've had no trouble adjusting the windshield, even at highway speeds.

I noticed that you have a Want to Buy notice in the classifieds for a replacement bare plastic windshield adjuster holder thingy. I'll PM you about that.

Re: Broken windshield arm retaining pin holder on the plastic mount

Jer,

If you look at the page where your pic is located (that you linked to above), you will find a line down below that says "BB Image Code:" followed by . Copy that whole [img] line into your post and it will show the pic inline with your text. Just try and reduce the size of your pic before uploading to 600x800 pixels or so, or else it will show the full-size pic which is often much wider than your computer screen.

And I agree that the windshield mechanism is designed to break away on impact. A zip tie fix is probably fine if you check it for wear every so often, but I don't think I'd use a hard mount like the home made u-bolts.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Thanks, Ken. I'll try the pic copy with a smaller version in the future. Really great info to know.
I also didn't realize that the design was meant to break away on impact. Makes sense, but it's a heck of an assembly to swap out after 8-9 years. I guess I defeated the safety feature to some degree. I did like the "U" or "C" bolt fix, but that's really a permanent application.
I really appreciate the input from everyone.
