The rear drive on my '03 ...

i haven't had my rear drive apart, so i have no idea if i've got the 17-ball upgrade. but i've serviced the rear-end oil twice now ... the most recent time this past weekend.

there was a bit of dark sludge near the magnet, but none of the shiny metal bits that others are fretting over. should i be worried? LOL.

of course, soon as i make this post that bearing will probably eat the dust in the most dramatic possible way. such is life.

so far, 25k miles on my LT and no problems other than a burned-out low beam ... now replaced with halogen.

If ya are really, really worried about your read end, move to snow country. Few reports of bearing failure and snow on the ground.

The little bit of sludge is fine.. Just no large bits of metal on the plug...

There is a thread around here that says the 19 ball bearing is standard and only a rebuilt final drive here in the states would have a 17 ball bearing ............regards Pete

hmmm .... i thought that most LTs built after 02 had 17-balls standard. there sure has been a lot of confusion on this topic.

There are lots of threads that say lots of things. Some true, some not so. I believe that the above statement is the latter.

Exclamation When did final drive bearing ball count change?

That question was asked on the old forum...click HERE to read through the thread. I think the answer lies within.

Naw. Someone in snow country posted he froze his balls off, and his rear end was fine. Hence the move from 19 to 17 balls.

Think the guy was Dave and he was a hermit living in a cave? Or was he a well driller?

Some unfrozen snow fell on me today.
Got dissoriented, and lost my way.
