Was at the bike show, and how do they do it?

The 08 LT was $2k less then the Goldwing. How do they do it with the exchange rate? I was selling the LT's virtues over by the wings.

List price is one thing but I would be willing to bet a comparable Wing can be OTD'd cheaper than the LT?

The R and D on the current LT was done a LONG time ago.

I would also bet that BMW NA is making next to nothing on LT's right now with the exchange rate what it is...

My neighbor said he bought his new wing(without the Nav) for 16,900. Sounded reasonable. Not sure how low you could get a LT?

Price of LT & Gold Wing

I purchased a 2008 Gold Wing in September. I could have purchased an LT for about the same money. The Gold Wing will list higher in price with the same equipment but they will give about $3,000 dollars off where BMW gives about $1,500 off list.

I was looking at Gold Wings 2 weeks ago. Sticker price on one with the nav system (an expensive option) was > $22k. Without even asking about the price, the sales guy said "We'll start negotiating down from $20k." Do you think he was anxious to sell?

Bet it doesn't have several other "options" as well.
  • Heated seats
  • Heated grips
  • Rear speakers
  • Comm system maybe ... but probably no headsets
  • The Wing still doesn't have a remote windshield.
I know a few guys that bought Wings for under $17K. But they sure didn't come with the options that an LT comes with. And Honda is pretty proud of their HondaLine products. They don't come cheap.

2008 Gold Wing

I purchased a 2008 Gold Wing with navigation, premium audio system, comfort package (heated seats, heated back rest, and heated grips and foot warmers) plus Metallic Red, which is higher. It listed for $22,399. All Gold Wings have intercom system in them, which is much better than any BMW system. Their system has blue tooth cell phone hookup, radar detector and XM radio hookup through head sets. I had the Baehr system in my BMW and the Honda system is much better. I paid outright cash $19,500. I also get 15% discount for all accessories purchased. There are a lot more accessories available for the Gold Wing but their accessories are not as high priced as BMW. This is better than dealing with any BMW dealer. With BMW there is very little discounts. When I purchased my 2005 I got 10% off accessories for the first 30 days then list. I get 15% any time I purchase any accessories for my Gold Wing.

Jerry,

Do you still have a LT? What made you go with a wing? I have a gl1800 now, and I'm looking at the LT.

I had a 2001 LT, which I put 36,000 miles on with no problems then I purchased a 2005 and put 57,000 miles on it with a lot of problems. I had fork seal leak, transmission output shaft seal leak, gas quick connects leak, 41,000 rear drive replaced and at 52,000 had the complete instrument cluster replaced. I do a lot of long distance touring and I never knew if I was going to get home without a problem. I loved the LT's but they are not reliable. I like the Gold Wing much better for touring.

Lt

That's why I sold my 2005 and got 2004 LT instead. I am hoping that 2008 model had issues worked out. So, by the time by 2004 gets old then I would go for 2008 LT. GL is not a bad bike but I love my LT.

Just purchased a new LT. Lots of negotiation and still north of 20K.

Either or......

I've owned my 2000 LT for almost 3 weeks now. I love this thing! I've never owned a Wing but have friends that do. I grew up on Honda's and bought my 1st BMW in my 40's. I like Honda quality but also like the quality of my BMW's (I've yet to have a bad experiance...knock on wood). I'm a engineer by profession and it seems like a higher number of us engineering types own Beemers. I found a great deal on this LT and if I had found a similar deal on the Wing I'd have that too! My preference in general is the BMW. The dealer pricing is a major negative for me. I can't stand the thought of dropping my bike off for service and parting with $1000+ every 12,000 miles. I will give up my time to service it myself when I can. The motorcycle business is just like the car business. Many brands and many styles to fit the taste and budget of the buyers. Just my .02$ worth.
