How many miles before checking FD oil?

Brand new FD, used that strawberry gunk oil in it.
How many miles should I give it before swopping out the oil and checking for metal particles?
I may chuck the oil back in if it looks mint. Wish I had a magnetic filter!

Due to the low cost of the lube, I would put new lube back in. I change mine now with every oil change.

600 miles sounds like a good idea. I think one member did a Used Oil Analysis at 600 miles and the factory BMW/Castrol gear lube had high wear metal content and had lost viscosity.

Which strawberry gunk oil did you use? You might look over this report and see if any of the top performing gear lubes are available in your area. http://www.amsoil.com/products/gearl...spx?zo=1181889 .

Another vote for changing it at the same times as the engine oil. As one of the people here told me: It's about the easiest maintenance on the bike. (Which shows a complete lack of understanding of my mechanical aptitude!)

Custom sig temporarily unavaiulable while I think about it.

On FD drive oil changes the first at 600 is a good idea then every 6000 should be good.
As for the type of oil I'm with what Grif stated on the other oil thread, Wesson.
Here's a fact sheet on wesson http://www.jbc.org/cgi/reprint/103/2/455.pdf that proves it superiorty over the other oils, carotene is the key.......

I had my GT's oil changed the first day, at about 80 miles. Then again around 500. After that it's every 6K, give or take. Oil is cheap enough, and I wanted to get a good flushing out right from the beginning.

Get it warm.. replace... if clean on first pull, replace at next "service interval"

Rear Drive oil analysis

500-600 miles is good, but gotta ask? Why in God's name would you put back the fluid you just took out? It (fluid) is cheap enough. By using the old fluid, you risk contamination and MORE final drive problems. Being cheap will cost ya IMO.

I'm going to keep approx the same change interval so that comparing results is more relevant. If you change the interval too much, you can no longer directly compare the wear results.

Not sure if the comment was directed at me or not - but I never reuse the old fluid - for the very reason you stated.

Is it acceptable to use AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-110 in FD and tranny?

Yes. The 75W110 is acceptable to use in any application that 75W90 is recommended for and meets the 75W90 viscosity guidelines. The 75W110 can be thought of as the thicker half of 75W90 specifications.

Some people convert results to a wear per mile basis when they like to experiment with different oil change intervals. Might be something to consider.

Well that would mean you can not use it in the K's FD. The spec is 80-90 GL5.

That is why when I ordered my 6000 FD fluid from Amsoil, I went to the 80-90 GL5 spec.
