clutch verdict in (58000 kms)

Hi there everyone, well the verdict on my slipping clutch is in, the dreaded slave cylinder leak. this means to me maintenance has nothing to do with this failure. I have had the clutch flushed every year since new. There was lots of clutch lining left, everything else looks really good, splines other seals, still changing the rear main and trans input seal as well as new slave cylinder and drilled the bleed holes. Sure wish the ceramic clutch was available. This is the first clutch I have had to put in in my 35 years of riding and I kept my XS1100 for 23 years. Not overly pleased, mostly the cost for the repair, love the bike, still think its the best ride out there. but not looking forward to another repair in 58000 kms. BMW should get its act together and get back to the reliability that it used to have. I can live with the high maintenance costs, valves, brake flushes etc, but clutch and rear axle failures at such low mileage, its just sad when you are paying a premium price for the bike to get that extra quality. OK thanks for letting me Vent. Now lets go for a ride.

Hi Darcy,

Sorry to hear of your experiences.

I share your frustration at the points you mention. If I "beat the H*** out of my bike and break stuff--OK. It's the guy who follows the book maintenance and is still looking at $2K in repairs.

Imagine a car having similar problems, no way. There would be a huge backlash.

Isn't it funny, "We" tolerate the BMW's problems, like the "old faithful" tolerated the Harley Warts over the years.

Hey--aren"t we supposed to be better than THEM??

Seriously, it aint funny. These mechanical problems WILL lose a % of BMW riders.

Darcy I hear you as well. The maintenance costs are high as are the repairs.
I thought German engineering was superior! With my other bikes I still maintained them but not to the letter like I do now and still have had expensive issues with my BMW.

I have never owned one of their cars, do they have the same issues?

Ok now lets ride, oh wait a minute it is snowing out

Clutch slipping

At least you got 58k miles out of your clutch. Mine is slipping and I only have 19k miles on it.

I still like the bike, but when a company takes its customers for granted, it makes you want to make a change.

Have fun. It is an enjoyable bike.

We are maxed out with the purchase of our 99LT with 42K. I can only hope we beat the odds with these clutch and FD issues.....Sometimes it's just better to enjoy the bliss of not knowing.

I NEVER, ran into any of these issues in all the years of hard riding my Suzuki GS850, or any of the other many rice burners I owned.
