Found my gas mileage problem!

Been experiencing fluctuating miles per gallon for the past 4-5 months. It was averaging between 42-26 mpg. Shop hooked it up on the computer and found that the Oxygen-Sensor was bad. Had it replaced this am and now mileage on the trip home averaged between 50-48.5 miles per gallon. Turned out the Oxygen-Sensor has a five year warranty thru BMW. Glad of the warranty because this sensor is one pricey little dude ($220.00 plus labor).

Just thought I would pass this information on just in case others are having mpg issues.

Thanks for sharing the info

Did you notice the drop on the bike's computer or did you just seem to have to fill up sooner. Did the warranty include labor?

I found the same thing when I hooked mine up to a GS-911, they sell the exact part at O'Reilly's for $90.00. And yes it made an instant difference in the MPG. You have a good dealer, mine didn't tell me that he just told me the price, and how much the labor would be. It is pretty easy to change.

Dano, I first began noticing the drop in mpg's on the computer. Then I began noticing a lot of black soot coming from the exhaust, enough to paint the ground black if left idling and rpm's were induced. The fumes from the exhaust was so obnoxious it would almost make your eyes water. I reset the motronics once thinking that the bike was running to lean. It worked mpg's went back up into the 40's and fumes and black soot were gone. That held for about 600 miles, then on ride I noticed the mpg's down in the high 20's to low 30's and soot and fumes had returned.
Yes the warranty included the cost of labor.
