ABS Brake Pump Failure

I took my LT in for it's 18K service and asked the service tech to tell me why my "Brake Failure" light was on. After 3hrs he finally figured out that my ABS Brake Pump was bad. The bike had 2 weeks of warranty left so I didn't feel soooooo bad. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm told that the ABS pump rairly fails.

It does happen occasionally. Be glad you're in warranty. It's about two grand parts and labor

I say BULLHOCKEY on "rairly fails". I'm sure it's not real often. But according to posts on this lists it happens much more frequently than the rear drive failure (RDF) we all worry so much about. What I've always found strange is that given this is a more costly fix than the RDF why don't more folks on this board go apesh!t over this BIG issue. Maybe because you can ride away from a n ABS pump failure. I'll bet if you were out of warranty like I was when mine went bad you'd "feel SOOOOO bad"!

I had my brake fluid changed at the service spec intervals...but still only got 29K out of my pump. I was out of warranty on time but low mileage...BMW wouldn't work with me...what's new.

Tom,

You have a different "pump" that has been shown to be more failure prone than the newer Integrated units. But give them time and they too will fail.

It doesn't get as much noise here because it doesn't happen nearly as often as FD failures. Sucks that yours was out of warranty

Exclamation ABS pump out

My 2005 K1200LT with 38,800 miles has had the ABS piston fail two months out of warranty (two days ago). Quoted $2000 parts and about four or five hundred labor. "not happy". Have a two hour drive to nearest dealer and spend thousands a year to ride. Thought the "German Engineering" would make this a fairly trouble free ride. Lots of fun goodies on this bike but I have to defend this purchase to myself to often. First and last bmw. I can't believe BMW doesn't even have a factory service manual for their bike! Going to look for used pump and dig in myself. Yuck Any help out there will be appreciated.

My 2005 "went out" when I was doing a significant traffic maneuver. ABS on, ABS off, ABS on...sorta... ABS off....

Drop #1.

Took 6 weeks to get a new one.. then it was bad... 2 more weeks and things are working great.

Oh.. that was around 6k miles.

Re: ABS Brake Pump Failure

My '05 1200 LT had 26k mi./5+ yrs. and both abs lights came on. Happened right after pads replaced, so I figured sensor fault. Took it back to wrench and he said he bled system but rear abs failure, ft. wheel has abs, and don't ride it as is. I am waiting on the good fairy for $3K to fix. Dealer never bled fluids for first 4 years, and my wrench said yearly bleeding is recommended. Dealer sucks as usual. I would have gladly paid to bleed yearly since birth.

PM sent...

Worse case, why not see if you can fix it yourself? Set a $ amount and then take apart.. if they want the "core" you can put back together..

Are you sure it isn't the seat that makes it feel like half million miles?

Re: ABS Brake Pump Failure

mine failed on a highway going in a straight line, I had total brake loss no residual whatso ever, when I slowed to a halt using the gears the even below 10 mph the brakes would still not stop the bike my boots did. When I took it to a BMW owened dealer not a franchise I was told impossible for them to fail completely. Oh right I said so can the workshop manager drive my bike down the ramp into the workshop. He then comes up and says you were right they failed completly ! however he has to tell me from BMW it is impossible for them to fail ! I aproached BMW and they said do one looser what are you going to do about it !
He was very helpfull in trying to fix them. I stripped the pump and changing the fluid is not critical to it working as unless you have chunks of rubber over 2mm then there is nothing to blockup. There are pressure switches and my fault code was saying too much pressure in front circuit. everything mechanical was working fine. I tried like hell but could not get the pressure switch from anywhere ! the origonal manufacture ect.
