Transmission Seal Leak 3rd time??

Transmission Seal Leak 3rd time??? I had the transmission shaft seal replaced on my 05 at 17k at the dealer. At 18k I noticed the boot was slightly oily. Took it to the dealer and he took the clamp off the boot and about 1/2 cup golden oil came out. He replaced it again. Now at 19K I am noticing the oiley boot again. Any ideas as to why this seal would go out again?

Two or three main possibilities; one cheap and the others not so much. The cheap one is that the seating depth is very important on these seals. If you seat the seal too far, a leak will result. The manuals all say to measure the depth of the original seal and seat the new seal to the same depth. Doesn't do much good if the original seal was seated too deep. Unfortunately, the manuals don't give specific depth measurements (why they give a measurement for something like the cruise control cable adjustment but not a seal seating depth is beyond me).

The more expensive possibility is that your output shaft is undersize or has a burr on it. I seem to recall a fairly recent thread by someone who had an extremely determined and diligent tech who eventually traced the cause of a shaft (input shaft??) leak to an undersize shaft - which I would think is extremely rare, although depending on the manufacturing & quality control processes, if you make one undersize shaft, it's real easy to make & ship a whole batch of them. A burr on the shaft from a sloppy assembly or service process - even a very slight one - could also chew up the inside of the seal and lead to seal failure.

The last one is like #2, although on the other side of the seal: the bore in the tranny could be slightly oversize or damaged.

Just a coupla ideas. Is your machine under warranty? If so, with this being the third time, I would press hard for him to start replacing something other than just the seal.
