Unhappy What did I do?

Help! I was working in my garage over the weekend and put my K12 outside (it was about 45 degrees and dry) About 9PM I went to start it and drive it back in the garage and the engine started but the headlight didn't come on. I shut it off using the key and tried to restart it. The engine didn't start, the headlight didn't come on and the starter motor would not stop cranking the engine. I turned it off, pulled the key tried to push the start button incase it was stuck but the starter kept running till the battery was dead. I pushed it inside, disconnected the battery and recharged it over night. As soon as I touch the negative battery lead to the battery post it starts cranking the engine again! Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks
Tom

Hit the starter button as soon as you touch the negative cable to the battery. It might free up the starter and stop trying to start.. You welded the starter relay because of low voltage. Known issue on the older bikes. There is an upgrade for this from BMW.

This is the infamous starter relay problem on older model LTs. IIRC, if the battery voltage gets low enough the bike will attempt to start but what happens is the starter relay welds itself together, which then causes the starter to run until the battery is flat or you pull the battery connection. They updated the relay a few years back to currect this problem, and it may be covered under a service bulletin. If so the dealer may replace it for free, otherwise you'll need to either pay him to replace it or do it yourself.

Located on the right side of the bike- electronics box. If I remember correctly, I believe I read $150 (this maybe installed?).
