Steering Dampener Problems?

Anyone ever have a steering dampener blow a seal? And puke all over itself?

I've heard of a few steering dampers blowing a seal. It's not that common, but it does happen. I think there are places you can get them rebuilt, but a new one may not be that expensive.

It didn't puke, but it did slowly die. I replaced it with a Hyper Pro. The old OEM faded away slowly so I didn't really notice, but after I put the Hyper Pro on it was a night and day difference.

I had one go on a 99 LT. It cost me about $50.00 through my dealer to purchase one and about 15 minutes of my work and it was as good as new. It was an easy replacement.

Yup, Hyper Pro That's what's on my list. Going with the OEM unit doesn't make sense - No adjustability, No cool colors, No fun!

Mine blew this summer between Napa & Lake Tahoe. I was on a rough black top road for about 20 minutes (very rough) constant vibration running about 50. When I rolled into Tahoe about 4 hours later I was parked outside the Hotel on freshly coated Black top & noticed a clean oil spot just behind the front tire. The retaining clip, washer & seal had all blown back on the shaft. at speed the next day heading across 50 I eased off the handle bars a couple of times to see if it had any head shake or shimmy, seemed fine but will have it replaced ASAP.

Raffy rebuilds steering dampers

Send Raffy a PM to see if he's got one for cheap. I changed mine a year ago and haven't gotten around to sending him my old one yet.

At $340 each, I don't think I need a HyperPro damper.

Both my K-bikes have their dampers "busticated": oily all over and no damping. Same with a previous K-bike.

Got a replacement (about $250 OEM), but could not get out the Torx bolt that attaches to fork cross brace. The quickie attempt was foiled; not as easy as it seemed: lock-tite'd bolt twisted in the rubber seat and its head stripped.

Will be now a winter project: to take out the fork cross brace with the damper in order to clamp it and remove on a bench.

Seems like the dampers really do not last.
