Question 2002 and younger LTs - Questions from a Buyer

Hey LT dudes,

A potential new LT kid on the block. Sold my Shadow Sabre last weekend and am looking into touring bikes. So far, Gold Wing and BMW LT are the top choices.

My budget is under $10K. I was advised earlier to only look at 2002s and younger. Questions:

1. What are LTs' standard features for that age range and what are custom extras?

2. What is an acceptable price breakdown per year / miles?

3. Any other info/advice - remember, I know nothing about this bike except for the fact that I seem to like it.

4. Any comparioson with Honda's Gold Wing would be appreciated.

Thanks LT dudes!

Last October I bought a 2002 LT Custom for $8800 with 21500 miles on it. The LTC has/had heated grips, seat, AM/FM cassette W/ 6 disk CD changer, chrome trim and on board computer as standard equipment on the custom. Plus all of the base LT's standard equipment.

Check out the classifieds on this site. Also, keep an eye on www.ibmwr.org/market, www.kbb.com and www.nada.com and ebay and you'll have a good idea of the general range, then bide your time and a good deal will pop up. Mileage ranges all over, but it doesn't have much of an impact. At less than 10K you'll be looking at 02 and an occasional 03.

Do a search on goldwing on the site and you'll find lots of comparisons, but at the end of the day, you have to ride them both and see which fits you best.

Tarheel Rider found my 03 in his local paper. It was listed at a shade over $10K, but final price ended up at $9745 for an 03 with 6289 miles. Also came with bag liners, two helmets, intercom and headsets. Your budget is in line with a really nice 03. I was in the same boat as you basically. no new gen Goldwings were available for that price that I could find. Plus seems like most are loaded up with too much chrome crap.

Like Joel said, be patient. If you find one a bit far off, members here will often offer to take a look for you. This is a great group and we welcome most everyone.

May want to stay with 03 or newer, due to the theory that 02 and older have higher failure rates on the final drive. That's probably the biggest issue. Also, be prepared for increased maintenance costs, if you are going to use a dealership. More in line with a big Harley than your Shadow. There are a few other minor issues you can investigate while you;re shopping around. All in all, a great bike for it's intended purpose of touring. Very sporty for it's size also.

The LT is heavy at slow speeds. Requires a bit of attention until you get used to it.

Good luck shopping.
