You missed my thread - it's not a ballast, it's an ignitor, and when they go bad, they blow the 7.5 amp fuse. I was told (when BMW replaced mine), that it should only happen if (a) the bike has been sitting, (b) the lamp is going south, and (c) the ignitor is bad. Too early to tell if this is going to be a growing problem....
Given that, there's a wire in the relay box (red) in the same circuit that can/does rub - if it wears through, you get a short that takes out that fuse.
The only way to tell which problem it is - is to watch (or have a buddy watch) when the headlight (low) or rear marker lights go out. On start-up, or hi/lo switch, see problem (a), if it's more random - like on a bumpy road, check (b)
