About to buy a 2005 LT...need advice! (long)

Hi all,

Just joined as I looked at several used 2005 on Saturday, July 14 and I'm about to make a decision. A bit of background to make you laugh:

1. I'm buying because I'm planning on riding from L.A. to circle the Grand Canyon the first week of October. I REALLY wanted a GS but I know my girlfriend won't go on that, so this is my second choice (boo-hoo, what a bummer). BTW- I'm 50 years old.

2. Don't spit on your screen when I say this: My current bike is a Ninja ZX-12R. I've had it for 3 years. For those who don't know: 0-60 in 2.5 seconds (with my mods) - 168hp dyno'd at the rear wheel. BTW- I'm 50 years old (did I mention that?).

So here's some questions:

I can buy several LT's for around $13K, so which is the better way to go?:

A. Buy the one with 16K miles, all service records, and $3K in options (Cee Bailey screen, Autocom with all the trimmings, Kontour seat, highway ottomans, SmarTire, BMW trunk rack, GPS/Radar shelf and all wiring for a Garmin/Escort, etc.) or:

B. Buy one with 4K miles and no options.

Both are in showroom condition, and the 16K miles were done all in the first year and all on long trips - it's been stored since summer of '06. I figure with that much mileage (probably nothing for an LT), problems would have already cropped up. The owner tells me it's had zero warranty issues.

Next question: Is there any recalls/service problems I should look for in the 2005 or even the 2006?

Next question: Since I've never ridden ABS or linked brakes before, can you turn either of them off? I've heard ABS is fantastic so I'm not concerned about it, but I'd like the option of turning on and off the linked brakes.

Next question: Has anyone been to the Grand Canyon in late September/early October? We'll be driving only from around 9-5PM so will we need electric clothes? To that end:

Next question: The Gerbings Cascade Extreme jacket looks like a good value. Is there something better? Is there a good jacket/electric liner combo that is also a good value? Apparently, the electrics zip out of the Cascade jacket, so I can use the jacket without them.

Next question: I'm wired for Garmin. The Zuma 550 looks like the way to go. Any opinions on this or others for the LT?

Last question: How do I embed those Smilies in my posts - I'm on a Mac using Safari. No Windoze comments, please, I switched years ago and it's the best thing I ever did on a computer!

Last time I camped there was about that time IIRC. Afternoon thunderstorms. That may have been earlier than that (Aug/Sept)

Per discussion on the ldrider list, having the weather option is very nice.

Okay, back to Mike's questions:

I bought a plain jane 06 and have been putting on the adds as money and of course the wife would allow. It has taken me a year to get (Almost) everything I want on her, but they are what I wanted to add. If you want to get what you want then get the plain one, but it sounds like the loaded one would be a great deal, provided you liked all the adds. Make sure the seat and windshield are right for you. There are different comm. packages and opinions vary on those so just make sure it is what you want the way it sits.

05 and 06 are the same bike and I am not aware of any problems associated with either model year.

The rest of the questions I have no info on, so will leave to those who do. Welcome and good luck, ride safe.

1- 50 years old! Wow... got my LT when I turned 50... finally grew UP and got away from HD...

2- with your current "power" experience, the LT will impress you with it's BRAKES!!! and power...

A- go for the farkles.. 16k is NO MILES on that bike!!

ABS - don't turn it off.. learn it's "quirks" and you'll enjoy it.. much more "power on demand" so you have to be careful when trying "low speed" braking... it's kinda like using a 30-06 to swat flies.

G.Canyon ... rode it after Thanksgiving.. needed electrics to ward off the snow starting to blow. Sept/Oct.. low risk... but if you HAVE the Gerbings, just crank 'em up.. if you DON"T have them... tsk, tsk, tsk,...

I have Widders.. love 'em. Even used them in the spring, at night, when running the Iron Butt.... a little warmth in the middle of the cool night air makes a HUGE diff!!!

GARMIN- 'nuff said

I've had no recalls or service problems on my 2006

No way to kill the ABS except to pull the fuse. I believe that kills the power assist to the brakes as well, which makes them really hard to use. I don't think there is a way to unlink the front lever from the rear.

Imbed the smilies in the posts by clicking the desired one from the board to the right as you post...

You don't specify where the bike was purchased but I notice you are in CA. If the bike (or any vehicle) is from out of state with under 7k miles, you will owe CA sales tax on the purchase price when you go to register. If the bike was purchased in CA then this isn't a problem. You already have lots of good input otherwise.

By either one. I bought a used 05 last October with about 21,000 miles (33,600 klms) on it. I had a 1984 Yamaha Venture and the best improvement was the brakes.

It doesn't matter where he buys it or how many miles are on it. If he registeres it in CA then he has to pay sales tax...

I agree. Buy the one with 16K, but more important the Kontour Seat! For me that is by far one of the best investments I've made. I can easily go 10+ hours and still feel refreshed.
I have a 2005 LT, loaded. CB, GPS, Satilite Radio (Sirius), Valentine One, heated seats, etc. The CB has turned out to be a waste of money as no one else ever has one.
My girl friend Loves riding on this bike. We've torn up the roads all day long and never a complaint.
We live in Modesto, CA. Recently went over Sonora Pass (Hwy 108) and came back over Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4). It was great, like running a salomon course.
I've got 11 states under my belt and ready to do more. You'll love it.

I camped in the Kaibab National Forest which is near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon last year in mid September (18,19). It got a little chilly in the morning before the sun came up. Our water was frozen solid and the temp gauge indicated 25 degrees. Bikes were kind of frosty looking too. Gerbings would have been great during the ride out of the forest early in the morning but if you are riding during the day, you probably wouldn't need them because the heated hand grips and seat(s) help to keep your body core warm.
FYI...the North Rim has a camping site with facilities but if you intend on camping it would be prudent to make a reservation. Also, there are some cabins for rent overlooking the Rim. I think the cabins have a long waiting list - like a year. Maybe you could get luck with a cancellation.

Definately the bike with all the farkles... They really add up!!! But, make sure you have it checked out thoroughly first. If it has been sitting, has it had gas stabilizer in it (stabil)?? The fuel system would be my concern. 16K is just fine. You have 3 services out of the way and 8K left before one more service.

Get an extended warranty on it before the regular warranty runs out. Great additional insurance. Those center stands are very expensive to replace and I have heard of some problems with them occassionally.

The seat I think is very expensive... Sounds to me like a great bike... But, do your homework !!

re bike purchase

Please note in a previous post that one contributor has just cracked 100k.
Regardless of the year it is a great ride. I have a 99 with 20 K. Purrs.......
My vote would be to buy one with all the toys miles notwithstanding.
Think brakes and tires.
One added thought, on the 16 K model LT run a can of Chevron valve cleaner;it will clean up your ponies and remove the rough spots during idle.

Hi Mike.
A couple of suggestions, comments...
1. Check the build date from the VIN numbers (enter the last 7 digits from the VIN here). Note that its in German, but just copy/paste the info it gives you to a translator and select the language (German to English). My "late 05" new purchase was an April 04 build date.
2. The "05's" didn't come with the Xenon headlights, that was an 06 change. Aftermarket HID's fix that (see Fashtek group buy posts).
3. I dont believe you can turn off the ABS linked brakes (plenty of posts about it before).
4. Check the rear brake rotors, they should have a slight amount of movement. Several have been replaced due to excessive movement and therefore premature brake wear. The rear brakes are also prone to being very noisy.
5. Check for any leaks under the bike and rear drive, if any sign of leaks, note where its coming from and check back in here with questions, lots of good info on wear problems (there have been some early clutch issues on 05's).
6. As far as all the extras go, its sounds like someones already done a lot of work for you, if you're happy with the way its been done. And the extra 10-12k on the clock really is nothing.
Good luck whichever way you go.

...and as far as using Safari, check in your preferences, there's a lot of little boxes there you may need to tick! The smilies should appear on the RH side of your text column when you reply to a post.

Great information and I took the advice of the overwhelming majority - I bought the one with the 16K miles (I gave the details in the post titled "Friend selling his 05 LT,questions about the price").

It was Built in July of '04 and sold September 29, 04 (I found out today) so I've got about 2 months left on the warrantee - and I'm going to take it to two different dealers to get it checked before the warrantee expires.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS on extended warrantees?

I kept getting calls from Warrantee Direct when I bought my car and came close to pulling the trigger several times. I never did.

Last year, they got kicked out of California by the Dept. of Insurance 'cuz of too many complaints - and they were considered the best!


What a great bunch in here - I've picked up a ton of tips from your advice.

Including the smilies - I used to hang out in a forum where you dragged them into your post, so that's what I was doing. Just clicking on them works like a charm with Safari - no modifications needed!

For a warrantee, you might try Bob's BMW in Jessup, MD That's where I bought mine. 4 year contract that covers the whole bike including clutch, ABS and drive train. The company they suggested was Interstate/Star Sport. You need to get the new policy in force before the original expires or there's an extra significant charge. I'd act fast, or at least research and investigate quickly so if you decide to do it, all the ducks are in a row. I dealt with a nice lady named Theresa @ 301 497 8949. As I remember they had 3 levels of coverage. As you'll learn fast, there's a great group here, and always lots of help and encouragement. dwillie.

I also troll the ZX-12R forums and let's just say - you can tell the age difference (although most of them ARE really cool)!

Been there at several different times of the year...including December. Late September and early October was outstanding....did not need any electric gear. Early morning can be a bit nippy but not bad. The weather begins to change then and anything is possible. The bigger problem would be crossing the Rockies at a higher altitude.

I like to travel in May and October......all the kiddies are off the road.....however...to be quite honest...the last trip in late September ran me head long into a bunch or cranky old farts who were out and about in cages.....

I want to die young...at a ripe old age.

Went to GC after Thanksgiving in 2005. Started snowing on us so we only got a few miles into the park.

There were still BUSLOADS of non-American citizens gawking and crossing the centerline.

We beat feet toward home (Louisiana/Texas) and were in Winslow, AZ for supper... Next morning bikes were covered in snow...

Luvit! yeah, I aint "right"...
