It's a bad month. The Garmin 2610 quit.

Took the bike out for a ride and decided to stop a wally world for a few minutes while I was out. When I came out, I started the bike up, and the Garmin 2610 was dead. When I got home, I plugged it into the 110 volt adapter to to make sure it wasn't a loss of power on the bike... unfortunately, it was dead on the 110 VAC adapter as well.

Anyone have a suggestion as to what I should replace it with??? I assume there is no use to send it to the factory for repair.. I probably could just buy another one new one for about the same price. I already have a nice mount for the 2610 and it is all wired up to the radio... but I would sure like to have one of those fancy new Garmins that are out now (except for the price).

Give them a call anyway. Mine was out of warranty when I had my cold weather screen problem. They finally gave me a wrma # and three days later I had a newly refurbished 2610. I have since replaced it with a 2720 from Costco. Much easier to see the screen in bright sun and the text to voice is really good too.

I'd definately give them a call. They'll refurb it at a very reasonable price if not for free.. They usually go way beyond their warranty.

Good Luck..

Garmin has a flat rate out or warranty repair set at 225.00 for the 2610. And it is almost 3 years old, so I don't expect them to wave the repair fee. I can buy a factory reconditioned 2720 for around 330 bucks, and I will get a new set of maps with it (my maps need to be updated, and that is going to cost me 75 bucks). It looks like I should consider just chunking it in the trash and getting the 2720.

Smile Upgraded.

Hi Dean, just upgraded my NAV II with a NAV III. Quite different units, but I haven't tried it out on the bike yet. (doesn't arrive here in the UK until 30th) If you still want to replace the 2610 with equivalent (NAV II) drop me a line. Comes with the OEM cradle with the extra 4 buttons and audio jack. You would need the OEM wiring loom (two leads) to utilize these functions though. Also can't send it until maybe the end of June, as I want to try it out for a while first. The Nav II was bought in Australia and so has the Asia/Pacific base map installed but with any detail map based in the US, the functions and poi's etc work fine. I installed a 1 Gb CF card so memory isn't a problem. Big upgrade in performance between units (search and go to functions in particular) so why would you not upgrade? Must admit though, I was always happy with my Nav II

Ok... I will wait until I talk to Garmin before I do anything... If they are going to charge me 225 bucks to fix it, I am just going to can it and buy a 2720 or a 2730.

I like the idea of having a MP3 player, but I am musically challenged. It seems to be that you need to know the name of the songs you like if you want to download MP3's. I just know I radio stations that I like to listen to for the most part, so I am not sure if I am musically endowed enough to get much use from a MP3 player.

Call Garmin and check, I think it is a fixed price to repair/rebuild/replace it. And then if you want a new one sell the 2610.

I agree with you Dean, but I don't think you will have to pay 225.

Here's the story:

Since I have already had one warranty failure back when I purchased the 2610, they offered to cut the repair fee to 100 bucks.

To be honest, I am considering ordering a 2730. I found some on Ebay for like 360 bucks. When you consider that my current maps are old, and that I am going to have to pay 75.00 to update the maps, the real cost difference is 185.00 for me to upgrade to the 2730 (with current maps). Garmin will let you update maps free for 6 months after your purchase, so I will get the maps that are released this summer also.

Get if fixed and sell it, you should be able to sell the 2610 for at least $200-250.

I have already ordered a new 2730 today (without the XM antenna).

I will probably fix the old 2610, but I doubt it will bring $200 on ebay since that is about what you can buy a new one for. I will probably just throw it in my pickup and leave it there.
