05 k1200lt perfromance

I am trying to understand some statements a riding buddy has been making regarding my R1200RT.

Now bare in mind he is a registered sociopath, but regrdless, he is claiming his '05 LT is much faster than my R12.

This runs contrary to every test I have read, and after riding his LT, my SOTP observations validate the reports I have read.

Is it time to have his medication changed?

I have a riding buddy with an 03 LT and our other buddy on his 06 1200 S twin cannot even keep up with him... No contest !!!

The LT rules!

Often varying performance numbers are relative to a certain rider's skill and determination, but, the bike specs are hard to dismiss.

R1200RT has 110 hp & 85 lb/ft and a dry weight of 505 lbs.
That's equal to .22 hp per lb.
BMW states the RT with go from 0-60 in 3.6 seconds.

K1200LT has 116 hp & 86 lb/ft and a dry weight of 761 lbs.
That's equal to .15 hp per lb.
IIRC an LT will go 0-60 in about 4.2 to 4.6 seconds.

The hp, torque and weight makes a huge difference.

Motorcycle Online shows the RT just a bit slower than a K1200GT ('07)

They both run the quarter in the mid 11's (about a half second apart) ...no LT can match that.

Your buddy is just wishing...

I moved from a RT1150 to the LT (2003). I also have a K1200S (2005)
My son has a 2005 RT1200.

The LT is plenty fast---especially if you keep the RPM's relatively high. The RT1200 is quicker than the LT due to a better power to weight ratio as well as the torque curve making the RT respond better to throttle input.

FYI--The RT1200 is quicker and more nimble than the RT1500.

The RT1200 has a higher top speed than the LT and is certainly quicker when you are running above 80 mph.

That said---the only time I really miss the RT power is when I am stopped on an uphill on the LT. Torque rules!

I ride with a couple of guys who have 1150RT's and when we merge onto the freeway from about 25-30mph up to 80 they all are amazed at how hard it is for them to keep up with me. When you talk about hp and torque and you can't beat it then why don't you put a 250lb person on the back of an RT then race? I had a new R1200R while the LT was getting a seal replace and can say it is fast! I agree most of this has to do with the rider but what do you think would be the outcome of the added 250lbs on the back of an RT1200? Do you really think the RT would be faster? I would bet on the LT.

Thank you for the replies.

His only excuse for thinking his LT was faster than my RT is the large amount of drugs he consumed in the 60's.

I can hardly wait for the top gear roll on contests this summer and the huge plate of crow I'll be serving him.
