Removing saddlebags???

I may need to remove the side cases on my 06' LT in order to fit it on a trailer along with two other bikes. I know how to remove the topcase, but haven't seen anything about the side cases? Anyone know how to do this?

Removing the case may not be enough since they are not the widest part of the motorcycle. I split lanes all the time and if the handlebars make it, the rest of the bike will make it also. With that said you will probably need to remove your mirrors and handlebars as well as the side cases if you need the width of the bike reduced.

Yes

Depending on how the 3 bikes line up next to each other, I can remove the mirrors without a problem. I just the back of the LT as narrow as possible. The front of the LT will fit into the V front of the open trailer, with my K12S and a Yamaha FJR flanking the LT, but probably facing rearward. So I need the back end of the LT slimmed down.

It's a lotta work

All you have to do is remove the top case and then the cover under the top case. Then you will find the top two screws for the back panel. Remove the rear light (two bolts on the left and right inside the cases). Then remove all the screws in the rear panel. Then there are four bolts, two top and two bottom to remove each case. Oh you also have to remove the screws from each side battery side cover (2 each). And don't forget to unplug the CD changer harness and push it out of the case. Like Zippy-gg said you only gain a little room at the rear, there are other things sticking out.

Are you sure you want to do this much work? It is not like the old system cases we used to have that just pop off.

Question

Another concern is the potential for getting the cases scratched, either during the R/I or during transportation. Are you sure you REALLY want to do this?

I may not want to do this, but I may have to. So I'll give it a try one of these days when the weather warms up. It all depends on how the 3 bikes line up and fit on the trailer. Its good to know how to do it anyway; just in case. Thanks for your help on this question. Hopefully I can avoid this trouble.

You can't just remove the side cases, they are fairly well integrated into the bike and aren't designed to be taken off and put back on. Also, the mirrors and front fairing are wider than the side cases.

Thanks Hans for the photos . . .

they give me an idea of what the underside looks like. As I said, I may not have to remove the saddlebags, but I have to keep my options open. I'm trailering an LT, K12S and Yamaha FJR out to Denver in July for a 2 week tour of the west, and depending on how the bikes fit with eachother, I may have to remove these saddlebags. The work for me is not a problem, and of course, I'll carefully pack the bags for the trip there and back. This is a once in while trip, normally I would tow only 2 bikes, and such removal would not be necessary.

Colorado is awesome and you're not going to want to leave after just two weeks, if you're going to do some "serious" riding and can work it in see Utah also, it's like riding on "another planet"

Removing the cases will get you about 4" of clearance on each side this is huge when trailering multiple bikes. Of course it all depends on where you need the clearance.

I use to tow to pay for my "Bike Week" trips. Never had any damage and I had up to 9 bikes at a time in a 24 footer. You are way ahead of the game with the dry run. I can't tell you how many last minute requests I've gotten due to someones thinking they could get 3 bikes in a 2 place trailer.

Remember compress the suspension about 25-30% and keep the bottoms of the tiedowns a minimun of 12" out from verticle - more if you are up high. Also the bottoms of the front ties should be slightly forward and the rears slightly backward, this will help keep everything in place.

Thanks Dave for the encouragement

Though it may be some trouble, if I need to remove the bags, I will do it, rather than put the third bike in the bed of the pickup. Which has its own difficulties and drawbacks. I hope I can get the necessary distances from the bottom of the tiedowns from vertical as you suggested. I've got till July to figure this out, so I'm confident we will manage. Thanks again!
