Well it finally happened. Started the engine and in a few minutes engine oil is coming out of the bell housing weep hole at a great rate.
She has 65K miles. I'm inclined to keep the bike and fix it. I will be using a very good independent shop in Chandler, AZ. Even though I have a pretty good idea about the "might as well's" while I'm at it, I'd appreciate any advice.
So far the list includes clutch, slave cylinder any seals and/or gaskets that are accessible. The shop has done many of these and has a list they recommend.
Does the list include using a Viton O-ring for the 19x4mm unit sealing the clutch housing (rather than the OEM Buna-N unit). This is the one that causes this problem. If they don't supply one send me your mailing address and I'll send you one for free.
That's the kind of information I need to be armed with. I'll be visiting the shop this week for a more detailed list. Right now I'm in no hurry...waiting for the heat to abate.
If you like the bike and are going to keep it for awhile, I suggest getting the O-ring from Beech and taking it in with you if the shop uses only dealer parts and doesn't keep the Viton variety on hand. The o-rings are not expensive but you usually have to buy them in bags of 10+. If it is going to be done, it is worth using the better non dealer O-ring.
I have used the BeemerBoneYard's Siebenrock "better than stock" clutch disc in several bikes and they work very well. But a recent look at their web site shows they have had difficulty getting those. They are using a supplier from England that is working well.
Others have found Motobins in England to provide very good parts at lower than US dealer prices despite the shipping cost.
There are no o-rings in the transmission the Viton o-ring is for the clutch housing where it goes on the output shaft of the engine. This is the biggest leak causing part so you want the best o-ring in there. I never mess with seal that are not leaking so unless there is evidence of brake fluid contamination from a leaking slave leave the transmission alone.
As far as induction system the only thing to clean is the throttle bodies and I also recommend Mr Injector for cleaning the injectors. You get a flow map before and after as well as new o-rings and filter screen about $75 post paid and well worth it. I have sent him three sets so far and I have been very happy.
If you are replacing your breather, you might send your injectors to Mr. Injector for analysis and cleaning which includes new o-rings, and whatever... quick turn around time, too!
I'll add Mr. Injector to the list. Thanks for the correction on the Viton O'ring.
