Used K1200LT Purchase Help

So I'm looking at used K1200LT Bikes on Craigslist and Cycle Trader. I would say my budget is around $6k. I have found a 2004 and a 2008 in my price range. I guess my question is are there any years to stay away from and is there a big difference in an 04 vs an 08? The 08 only has 9k miles on it and the 04 has 41k miles on it. Are they all pretty much loaded with options or is there certain options I should look for. I'm not a big touring rider but want something comfortable for my wife to ride with me on. Been riding a long time and have had a lot of different bikes.

Thanks

Re: Used K1200LT Purchase Help

The 05 was the "face lift" year where they changed the dash layout, upper the HP and changed the trim a small amount. I would get the "youngest" bike but bare in mind even the 08 is now 12 years old and rubber bits will need to be changed out including brake lines and fuel hoses. Radiator hoses hold up forever as they are EPDM and I have seen radiator leaks before leaky hoses. Even $6 k seems a bit high as these bikes do not hold their value but they are valuable to you if you like it as they do tend to last a long time unless the ABS unit goes out. Then you are looking at a major bill or a bypass. That price is worth it IF they can document the changing of the fuel hoses and brake lines.
Voyager likes this.

2009 K1300GT Red Rocket
2009 R1200GS (Gone)
2005 K1200LT Ocean Blue Blue Wizard 110 K and counting...
2006 Bushtec Turbo+2 Spell
2004 330 Ci Convertable
K4AN

Have ridden a Motorcycle in all 48
But lack DE, MA, RI and CT with the 2005 LT

I will ask the owner about the fuel hoses and brake lines. He is asking $6,900 for the 08 but there is no way I would give that. I'm thinking $6k max on that bike but it does only have 9k miles on it.

Thanks for the reply

Re: Used K1200LT Purchase Help

Wasn't there also a change around 2004 or so in front end geometry to reduce the low speed handling challenge?

Was that in 2004 or 2005?

I'd like to know for sure too, being that I have a 2004.

Thanks.

What is commonly referred as the "facelift" models had the change that you asked above (steering geometry) PLUS a lot more:
- different dash / instruments,
- more power (engine compression and throttle-bodies)
- Electro-Hydraulic Center stand
- Headlight low beam and high beam separated in 2 units
- Tire specs change to Bias-Ply instead of Radials (probably due to change in steering geometry)

For the USA market, these came as 2005 and later. For most other markets (Europe , Canada) this new design began selling as 2004 model - hence the common confusion about "was this in 2004 or 2005..."

If yours has the changes above, then you have this 2004-2005 "facelift model". This was the 3rd generation of K1200LT and was the last major change before end-of-production in 2009.

Picture of the front of these 2004-2005: note the separate headlights one being lower than the previous generation:

This is the one I may go look at. What would be the most you would pay for this considering it's supposedly in excellent condition and according to the seller always stored inside.

With that mileage its barely run in I would be jumping on that one before someone else snaps it up. We tend to pay more for the LT over here, I paid about the same for my 2005 and it had 91,000 kms on it which is about 56,000 miles.
