Final drive leaking

I took the BMW to the dealer and dropped it off for inspection and a new rear tire. They just called and said the final drive is leaking. It was pouring out of the bolts when the took the wheel off. They asked if I noticed oil on the ground. I did when I got home that night.

My question is, who is they guy who rebuilds final drives, and can he let me know the price? I lucked out last year and found a guy selling parts from the same year bike as mine. He had the parts because he did a trike conversion. I bought the final drive, hydraulic stand, and an Ohlins rear shock for 80 dollars. I guess I will be putting that one. I will put an EBC rotor on right away. Hopefully that is a good final drive.

That is interesting because the wheel mount bolt holes as far as I know, to not go all the way into the oil cavity of the FD. If you have oil pouring out of the bolt holes, you may have a larger issue. The go to guy is Saddleman ( Dave )

This type of rear drive leak is not very common - it is a type of failure that is not easy to repair. Please TAKE THE TIME to read the link below to understand why.

IN THE SAME THREAD below, you will see many replies from Dave (Saddleman) - he is the one here who has done more rebuild of these rear drive than anyone else. By clicking on his name, the forum software will offer option to contact him by private email.

That is what I was thinking by saying he had a larger issue. I have heard Dave say he pressed those two parts apart once and a leak between them is the only way any oil could find its way to the bolt holes. Thanks for posting that link. I had not come across it before.

Thanks. When I dropped off the spare final drive I had I confirmed it was coming out the bolt holes and was terminal. I just hope the spare I have is good.
