Gauges chatter when key is turned on

I have a 2006 K120LT with about 60k on it. I stored it in a friend's shed over winter. Battery was dead the spring. My helpful friend brought the battery charger for diesel tractors. After poking around and some sparks battery charged, but would not turn over. When I turn the key on gauges act funny. The don't full sweep and stutter as they return. Battery is at 12.5 volts until key is switched on. Then sinks to 6 or 7. When I unhook the lead to the starter the gauge symptom goes away, of course no connection to the starter leaves me with a BMW paper weight. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Re: Gauges chatter when key is turned on

If the battery goes to 6 volts with the key on it is a shot battery. Many a shot battery will show a no load voltage of 12 volts but will not support it under a load. Replace it. Unhooking the lead to the starter removes the ground for the load relief relay and kills the lights and other loads.
