Sting ray won't open

On to another problem with my new to me '05 LT.
The sting ray won't open. The lock turns but I can't push it in to release the lid.
I have read about the too long screw problem. I think that may be my problem. How can I gain access to it to check?

More 'problems' to come. I don't want to post them all in one thread. This way I won't get confused on which answer goes to what problem.

This is where you need to hold down the lock while cycling the fob, or giving it a good whack to dislodge the lock.

Where are you located?

Re: Sting ray won't open

While I do have a fob I do not believe it is working. Push either button and the led does not light up. I did put a new battery in it before trying.
My location is north central TN. About an hours drive NE of Nashville.
About the lock, which way is unlocked? Key slot vertical or horizontal? I ask because the right side bag is currently unlocked with the slot vertical but the online owners manual I looked at shows unlocked being horizontal.

Vertical is unlocked for the bags and the trunk, while the sting ray is horizontal unlocked on my 07.

Re: Sting ray won't open

If the lock was "locked" with the FOB you cannot open it with the key like you can the saddle bags. Two options are 1 bang on it until it pops open (don't destroy it but use a rubber hammer handle held on it while you bang on the head with something). 2. access the connectors for the central locking system up under the top case. The actuator is controlled by the pin 1 and pin 12 on the 12 pin connector for the alarm. Apply 12 v with + to pin one and ground to pin 12, if that does not unlock it then try + to pin 12 and ground to pin 1.

But before you do that try to re sync your fob by cycling it from lock to unlock (press the ribbed then the smooth button) several times (may take as many as 100) but eventually it will re sync then you should be able to unlock it.

The second pic shows the infamous short screw.

I just read your other post. On the FOB with a new battery hold BOTH buttons down and the LED should be flashing, when it stops flashing release both buttons, the LED should be ON. Now press either button and the FOB should be working.

Looks like the fob is truly dead. No led holding both buttons.

Could very well be. How far North of Nashville are you? I am two hours south just over the state line in Alabama off of 431. May be worth a trip down to help you sort it all out.

Re: Sting ray won't open

If you go to the next county north, you are in KY.
I'm in Macon County, TN.
I actually have a laundry list of things to fix. I'm listing them one at a time on the forum so I don't get things mixed up.
1. Luggage locks/latches, right bag works, left bag and trunk don't
2. Stingray
3. Low beam headlight burnt out
4. Cruise control not working
5. Trying to figure out the radio. Nothing I do works. I may end up having to replace it.
6. Running lights/fog lights (?) I have to find the switch
7. Motorrad Nav ll doesn't work so I want to remove the mount and wiring.
8. Motor smokes some on start up but clears after a bit of riding.
9. Antenna mast broken off.
That's what I know for now. I may find more as I go.

EASY...
1. Follow John’s advice already provided,
2. Same as 1.,
3. Is this Zenon? If so l have a complete unit.,
4. Check the micro switches by doing a search for a complete write up of instructions.,
5. Replace it.,
6. Does it have an Autoswitch? Press and hold the turn signal cancel button for 8 seconds, do same to turn them off,
7. Just requires a little digging in the bowels of the old girl., heck, you’re going in there anyway,
8. Characteristic. Do not park it on the side stand as soon as you turn it off... use center stand.,
9. Radio don’t work anyway but your choice to replace.

Now for the other stuff...

a) All fluids, including brakes and clutch, and spark plugs to be replaced,
b) Air and fuel filter along with hoses at the fuel filter, to be replaced.,
c) Quick disconnects, if original plastic, replace with set from beemerboneyard.com
d) Are brake lines original rubber? Replace with steel braided lines from Spiegler.,

Nice to do...

Factory black shock springs, replace with progressive if shocks are not leaking.

The above should be enough to keep you busy and familiarize yourself with the bike for many enjoyable years of ownership that the LT will provide provided the clutch, slave cylinder, and FD hold up, but we can walk you through those too!

Re: Sting ray won't open

I do not know if it has been changed over to Xenon but it seems to have some wires I'm not familiar with. But then I am not familiar with BMW wiring anyway. I need to get a side panel off to be able to look in there easier than from the bottom up.

Autoswitch? Don't know. I'll give it a try to see.

As for fluids etc., those will be changed as I get to them. I do that with any vehicle I buy as a precaution because I don't know how diligent the previous owner was.

Re: Sting ray won't open

I got the stingray to open. I had to use a rubber mallet on the handle to get it to release. I checked the short screw while I had it open and the screw is indeed short.
I tried to operate the release while open and it will not operate freely. I closed the it a couple of times and had to beat on the handle every time to reopen. I will have to get it (the handle) off the bike and disassemble it to see what can be done. Corrosion? Burrs?
I also was able to get the left bag to open using the same technique. I used a bolt with the same head diameter as the lock. I put the head on the lock and gave it some good whacks. It released the handle and I could open the bag. Surprised me to find about a pint or so of water in it. And a BMW bag. The bag is moldy but not badly. It will clean up. But water in there means the seal leaks.
I have to figure out how to get into the area for the bag lock to see what its problem is.
I tried the Autoswitch and no lights.
I'll move the car out of the garage tomorrow to put the bike in to start panel removal to gain better access to the headlight.

Re: Sting ray won't open

No need to beat on the bags, they will open with the key at 45 degrees (IIRC), just the stingray won’t open manually for some reason.

If you have a ballast box near the headlight, someone may have upgraded it to HID. Shouldn’t be difficult to remove and replace either one.

There is a comprehensive write up by sailor on trouble shooting the CC. First, I would move the various levers and listen for the micro switches. If you don’t hear one, thats where I would start. Clutch switch is the most likely suspect.

Would help to know what type of driving lights you have. Motolights are pretty common driving lights and “should” have a black rocker switch. Mine are mounted to the calipers. My switch is currently stored under the seat.

Re: Sting ray won't open

alabrew, I do have to beat on the left one. The lock will not operate. It is jammed/stuck in the unlocked position. So I can't put it in the 45 degree position. Pushing on it with all the weight my thumbs will take (and I'm not a lightweight) does not budge that lock to unlatch the lever. Smacking it with a mallet is needed for now.
The lock on the right bad works fine and I can easily push in to release the latch. The trunk is another story.
After googling Motolights they do appear to be a set of them. I'll trace the wiring to see where it leads once I get the tupperware off to look at the headlights.

Re: Sting ray won't open

Now that I think about it, you might do best to start at the at battery to see what “extra” wiring is there. The motolights wire to the battery with a fuse and a relay, I used the front left turn signal to energize them.

Have you tried some WD40? My LT side case locks used to collect crud (even though they are supposedly protected). WD40 solved the problem.

Why would a Water Dispersant help? Surely a penetrating oil initially, followed by a fast solvent like brake cleaner. When dry graphite powder in the lock to lubricate it.

Re: Sting ray won't open

Having removed the tupperware for the low beam headlight replacement, I was able to take the latch mechanism apart to see what was stopping it from working.
I guess it is part of the security system. There is what I think is a solenoid mounted next to it that shoves or retracts a pin in the way of latch. The pin was extended.
Can anyone tell me if something similar is on the trunk latch mechanism? Might be the reason I can't operate that one.

Yes BUT on that one if you insert the key and turn it 45 degrees it should open.

Re: Sting ray won't open

Crazy design flaw on that stingray latch. Had the problem many times when it returns from the dealership.
I put a couple of washers under that screw and wrote an instruction on the surrounding plastic . LOL.
Seemingly this is the least of your problems - wish you good luck on a legendry motorcycle and definitely will be worth all the effort.
I have had mine exactly 15 years and there is nothing on the market that I want to replace it with.

The 45 degree turn allowed me into the trunk. Thanks.
I found another BMW bag and a passenger arm rest.
