K1200LT, new battery & alarm going off

First I'm going to say, I'm brand-new to BMW bikes, so go gentle on me...

I'm in the process of buying a 2002 K1200LT from a family member. The state of the bike is that's been sitting (inside) for 2 1/2 years with a dead battery. The fob didn't have a battery in it at all. The biggest trouble here is that I can't talk to the guy who owns the bike because of medical reasons and his wife, while immensely helpful with a lot of other things, doesn't know a lot the ins-and-outs of things like the alarm. I did some searching, but I can't find -exactly- the situation we are in.

When we hook the new battery back up to the bike, the alarm goes off immediately. We've disconnected the battery pretty quickly because it's a small space and monkeying with it trying to get the alarm to stop becomes a literal headache. We put a new battery in the fob and I try to use the left button, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried it with ignition on and ignition off. When I put a new battery in the fob, initially the red light was on and stayed lit for a good long time. After a while it went out, but doesn't seem to light when a button is pushed, but lights up every once in a while, perhaps randomly, but I'm not sure.

There are two keys, neither of which have a black plastic surround. Both look like they might be aftermarket.

Unfortunately, the bike is over a hundred miles from my house and I'm going to have to go back on the weekend to try some more things. I'm trying to build a list of things to look at before I go so that we might get the bike started and get it out of the building under its own power. I figure if all else fails, I'll just use the alarm bypass mentioned in other posts, but I'd honestly like to keep the alarm if at all possible.

If anyone has some ideas I can try before I just give up and bypass the alarm, I'd really appreciate it.

EDIT: totally forgot to mention it, but I'd RTFM if I had one, but they don't have one for me to FR. I -really- wish I had one.

Re: K1200LT, new battery & alarm going off

OK once you get back to the bike and have a fresh battery in the FOB(make sure the little red light comes on when you push a button), turn on the key and keep pressing the ribbed button on the FOB. It may take many many presses to get the FOB re-synced to the alarm but it will. The Newer bikes use the ribbed button for set and the smooth for unset on the alarm but the 2002 uses only the ribbed button.

This should restore operation and you will not have to bypass the alarm - unless the horn will not blow with the key on in which case the alarm has an internal failure and blows fuse F4.

This is awesome info. Thank you so much. So should I just let the alarm blare while I’m doing this or is the alarm going off as soon as I hook up the battery indicative of some other issue?

Yes it will go off until you can disarm it or it times out. I went crazy trying to reprogram and early alarm and kept pressing ribbed and smooth to cycle trough the steps until I figured out only the ribbed button is used on the older bikes.
