What is this mounting tab on the lower forks for?

Hello, I am looking for options to mount some fog lights and I see that there is an extra mounting tab on the front of the lower forks (see pic.) What is this for? I am thinking about drilling and taping it to make a mount.

Looking to add fog lights similar to what these look like. I really like the added visibility the lights give your bike when mounted low. I wish I could find the youtube video where fog lights were tested in several different locations and having them mounted low was night and day compared to the others.

Just curious,
Did you pick which lights you wanted?
I was considering Hella or PIAA, but there are soooo many!

There are way too many choices. I have not picked out the model yet but I know what style I am looking for. I want these longer, thin models and will mount them vertically. I want some with the hybrid light pattern that does fog and spot. These are about 1.5" wide and 5.5" tall.

I thought these were meant to be mounted strictly horizontal? Or does it matter anymore with the LED's?

I am not sure. I have seen many of them mounted vertically. I can't see how it would matter too much on these hybrid lights. I very rarely ride at night because there are just too many deer in my area. I want these lights mostly for daytime visibility.

Not sure what year/model bike youíre referring to, but on some years of R1200RT itís a mounting point for the front fender assembly:

My bike is 2002 K1200LT. That sure looks like the same location. Must use the same forks for multiple bikes. Looks like I would be ok using that mounting point.

The 05 and up also used that for their front fender, so feel free to use it.

Re: What is this mounting tab on the lower forks for?

The pictures sure look like those are MotoLights-almost every LT rider had them at one time or another. They give you great visibility for folks coming at you. I switched to Clearwater lights two years ago when I felt I needed to see down the road more, and have the same front visibility for other drivers. They are mounted on the calipers. The lights you show are great for visibility but should you want to see more than your headlight, you might consider another option. Those are cost efficient-something BMW riders don't understand! Enjoy.

Re: What is this mounting tab on the lower forks for?

Bear in mind that lights mounted on the lower fork will get all the road vibration and impact that is not absorbed by the tire alone. Although LEDs don't have a filament that could break, there are solder joints in the lamp. You may experience an early failure, but it may be fine for several years.

That is an excellent point. Sadly, I will be lucky to put on 2,000 miles a year so I think they will last quite a while.

Re: What is this mounting tab on the lower forks for?

I had these amber driving lights on my RT and they made an unreal triangle of light with my LED headlights, plus the amber light was stunningly visible. The ambers I ran all the time day or night. Ordering them for my LT as soon as I have done absolutely every other maintenance item discovered when I got it, lol...but they are awesome lights day or night. In the picture I also have a light bar from the same place however it was only a four led, spot/flood combo but it appears it will fit ...I had over 5k lumens out of the front when everything was turned on, lol.

Very nice setup. Thank you for sharing. I am also going for the light triangle. I have decided on amber as well.

I can tell you about my experience with John at ADVMonster...he was a great guy and overnighted some clamps when the originals were not what I needed. Also the leds seemed to wear like diamonds I had that setup for 4 years, not to mention some prototype H7s in the headlight that he let me test. He also had the clear protective pieces that would go over the lenses. You could do a lot worse than those products, good luck. Now I got all fired up to put my light bar back on, lol.

Re: What is this mounting tab on the lower forks for?

I started out back in 75 on my GT-750 Suzuki with an amber and clear (all I could find at a yard sale) fog lights for the triangle. I continued that with my Motolights on the 05 LT. I run the amber on the left and the clear on the right (for the edge of the road at night). Kind of an Odd-Eye look. I guess I need picture some day.

Whether you get it from John or not, something I forgot to mention, he used to sell a waterproof rheostat for the lights and/or light bar that had some simple wiring so you could run the bar or lights on say 50% and then if you went to high beams or flashed they went to 100%. It was handy. Be prepared if you get a light bar, lol...you generally have to be lead rider because nobody wants to look at that thing in the mirrors . I fired it all up one night on a trip from Ruidoso to Roswell and I was stunned at the number of deer grazing just off the road, never noticed them with just the headlights...creepy but better to see all that stuff, I think . I slowed down, lol.
