Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres

Hi. Will need to replace tyres for this season. I read the Storms were shortlived on the K12OO LT lux, has anyone tried the 3D X-M versions?
The other options I have in UK seem to be Bridgestone Battleax BTO2O M or Metzeler Marathon Ultra ME888.
Many thanks in advance.

If you are worried about mileage, the BT020 may be your best bet. Properly rated for the LT and a good handling tire all around IMO.

Re: Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres

I have the 3DXM's on my 04. Around Northern Ohio,we have pretty much straight roads The front started to scallop and just got worse and hummed leaning to the right more so than the left. But it scallops up the front no matter what tire is on it. After going to the tame the dragon event last October. It smoothed out quite a bit and quieted down. But still hums leaning. I got about 8k on it. So not bad. But maybe i will go with an Am 26 out front? Or a 3DXM out back, and a Dunlop Roadsmart in front? Possible,Not sure yet.But I'm gonna try a different combo. But have little hope that no matter what. The front will scallop regardless. I will say the 3DXM's handle great and were very sticky. Handled good on wet roads.

What front pressure are you running? The stock 36 psi seems to contribute to scalloping. I have run 42 since the get go.

I had an AM26 on the front of my LT and I coudn't get it off fast enough. Even on dry tar snakes it was squirly and wet was like riding on pencils. Took it off with less than 1K on it and it sits in my garage never to be used by me again. I have a buddy that has an instatrike that I will give it to as it may be OK in that scenario not being able to fall over.

Re: Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres

I thought the Storm 2's were better. Maybe not mileage wise. But grip/road noise definitely were. Pretty sure the front uneven/scalloping is due to the extra longer wearing compound in the center. Maybe an Avon Spirit St ont front???

Howdy. I absolutely have inpot in to Avon Storm experience! I bought a pair several years ago and within 500 miles the rear had HUGE blisters. I have gone back to Metzelers with zero issues.

Re: Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres

Phew! I have read through all of these tire threads twice now over the past month or so. The diversity in experience is frustrating for me as a new first time LT owner. For a while I was convinced I was heading with the Avon 3D XM at 42/48. I'm not going to be riding in rain or doing 100mph in the mountains like some have posted. We will be 2 up and probably 60% in the curvey mountains of GA/NC and the other 40% is getting there and back from Atlanta. I drove the bike home when I bought it and it rode like a dream on the highways with a 2014 Metz Marathon on the front and 2012 Mich Commander rear - lightly worn but no idea of mileage - obviously too old and must be replaced.

How can one guy swear by Avon and the next have an Avon blister after 500 miles?!?! I would have thought there'd be more convention and comparative ratings like in the cager world, but I haven't found that yet, and I realize the LT is a special animal when it comes to tire loading.

I guess I'm going to have to take my lumps, pun intended.

Re: Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres

There are variations in the manufacturing processes. I have run 9 Metz 880 fronts since new (2004) and only one ever blistered and that was noticed as I was getting ready to change it anyway. Just a risk you take.

There was never a correctly rated Michelin for the LT rear so I would loose it as soon as possible. 79V Reinf only. I have run both the 880 (10) rear and lately (the last 6) have been Bridgestone BT-020. Average 14-15 K on the fronts and 6-8 K on the rear (all subjective to the amount of braking (F) and how hard on the throttle (R).

Re: Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres

I'm having some trouble finding the right size/model Bridgestones for my 2004 LT ABS.

Just to make sure I have this right; Front is BT-023 with W58 rating and Rear is BT-020 with 79V rating - correct?
