Oil FILTER, not OIL, question :-)

Hi All,

out of curiousity; - ordered a new oil filter for the LT besides other parts some time back from one of several fleabay parts suppliers and received one, which after having arrived turned out to be only about 6 cm's high, compared to the one I removed that one was about 8 cm's high.

Not intending to use that one given the size difference I got another one that has the same and more correct height but wondering what filtering difference and effects on the engine using that would result in if any, looking at approx. 25% less height/presuming that would transfer into the same amount less filtering capacity/volume when compared to what I believe is the correct one at 8 cm's height? Would it still be sufficient or as I presume, needing all/maximum filtering capacity one can get, this was an incorrect parts supply?

Informed the supplier of the what I presume to be (more) correct at least filter height for the LT (at least the 8 cm height) if that would help them and any future buyer and also got a refund with no hassle so...

Somewhat aware of the differences between filter designs/tech also internally and the claimed and proven filtering qualities but still curious especially when outside temps are below 0 degrees Celsius... :-)

Safe riding for those of you who can from an "office desk rider"...

In many cases, a different oil filter will "fit" on the oil port so you then get into what are the internal qualifications for either using that filter. There are many comparisons of different filters versus manufacturer and the results are very interesting to see just how they differ. Being smaller, it would be suspect of having less overall capacity than the original but only an internal comparison would tell that tale. Being smaller, I would also wonder if it has a bypass valve inside for cold starts to allow oil to flow or is it an absolute filter with no bypass or just less overall filter media. On my cage, I run the " Turbo" model filter as it is about 40% larger and it fits the available space. Mine is NOT the turbo model but I suspect it has more overall capacity and would go longer without clogging and bypassing the filter element. A 40% larger filter on the LT and you would not get the cover plate back on so as a general rule, I would not put a smaller size filter on the LT. We want to protect the innards as best we can including that Nikasil cylinder coating. I personally would not run that filter without knowing exactly what was in it compared to the OEM.

You can get quality filters from places like Beamer Boneyard and Amazon has the OEM MAHLE filter for less than the dealer price.

8 cm is the correct filter height. I only use BMW filters in my LT but I am using a Mahle on my K1300GT.

If the only difference is the height, then it likely makes no difference at all. I would be more concerned that it might lack a good bypass valve or such. Keep in mind that most manufacturers now recommend the oil filter be changed only every other oil change, which suggests that the filter has twice the capacity needed for 5-6,000 miles. So, even with 25% less filter media, you still probably have 50% more than needed for a standard oil change interval.

Thanks for the feedback! Will probably cut the 6 cm one apart just to check the internal parts so may be back on this, depending on eventual findings... :-)
