Thumbs up Cheap insurance

Last week on the Eastern Colorado Plains, "Road Dog" (my 00K1200LT) was brutally attacked at road speed by a giant tumbleweed!! This sucker was about 6' in diameter!! I slowed to avoid it but at the last second it made a mighty leap and attacked the front of the bike!!

Stopping to inspect the damage and extricate the monsters tentacles from the front - found this damage to the headlight protector!! WELL DONE!! The headlight was undamaged!! Cheap insurance!! New one on order!!! :-)

I hit one of those in So Cal in December a few years ago, on a rented HD. I was glad to be on a heavy bike! It is scary stuff!

Re: Cheap insurance

Do those tumbleweeds have a hard stem that would cause that kind of damage? No tumbleweeds here in PA. We have whitetails instead.

YES!! This monster had a stem about 2 1/2" - 3" in diameter!! They get large out on the plains.

I’d much rather have to dodge tumbleweeds than deer, tumbleweeds don’t suddenly change direction!

Re: Cheap insurance

Fun fact: Tumbleweeds are actually from Russia!

Those who say that it can't be done shouldn't interrupt those who are doing it.

I probably would also, but any tumbleweed that can break a headlight protector deserves respect.

I have been fortunate in having had only one deer contact in 42 years of driving in PA. That was when I was 19 and had a deer run down a bank along the road and into the side of my VW Beetle. I went clear across the other lane (country road and night with no traffic) trying to get away from it, but it seemed intent on crashing into my Beetle. It hit the passenger door and window, luckily not breaking the glass, but leaving blood and saliva on it, before bouncing off and denting the right rear fender. So, I say I have never hit a deer, but one hit me!

In addition to the grace of God, I give much of the credit to my early deer hunting experience. Deer are more predictable than more people think and if you understand them a little, that goes a long way combined with a little common sense and hyper vigilance when driving during dawn, dusk, and rutting and deer season. The vast majority of deer collisions were entirely preventable.
