Trip Tracking device

Is there a GPS tracking device available my other half can use to see my location while I'm out on a trip? I've looked on the Web, but can't seem to find one that is what I need.

There are a couple ways to do it that I've found. A free way would be to load an app on your phone (Bubbler GPS Lite) and use Spotwalla (free account) to upload your location points to a map on Spotwalla. The free version can only hold 5 points, so if you're going to be out of cell range for a bit the get the paid version as it has unlimited points it can store for upload when you get back into range.

The other methods involve using Spot or Delorme/Garmin GPS device. I prefer the Delorme/Garmin InReach devices as they allow your phone to connect and send SMS messages to your contacts and that it's a month to month plan, as well as logging your points to online maps. They can also work with Spotwalla so you could have a single account in that regard.

Re: Trip Tracking device

My wife uses 'Find my Friends' from our iPhone app. Cheap, and although limited (where phone gets service), it has worked well. Other alternative? Take her with you!

Re: Trip Tracking device

There are tracking devices that you can rent/buy. SPOT is just one of many.

Re: Trip Tracking device

For Android users you can use Google maps. Just sign in and add the persons gmail account and then select share my location and you can even set for how long to share.

Re: Trip Tracking device

I use the Road ID app on my phone so my wife knows where I am when I'm out riding my bicycle. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a motorcycle.

Re: Trip Tracking device

If you have a suitable Garmin device. I think most of the recent Zumos feature the LiveTrack function. You do need to link your smartphone with the Zumo, and it will allow people to whom you have give authorisation to see where you are.

Re: Trip Tracking device

My wife and I like LIFE 360 on our Android phones. Free. Launches quickly and pretty accurate. I can usually see exactly which parking slot she parked in at the mall! Not only shows where you are but also where you've been over the past 48 hours. So even if I have no cell phone service when I crash, she can still show Search & Rescue the breadcrumb trail for the previous 2 days which might show where I was likely going.

Of course, it's just like the other phone tracking apps (of which there are so many I can't believe the O.P. couildn't find one!) that uses cell phone service for tracking. Once you're beyond cell phone range, your phone might as well be a brick. Nothing like a Spot or a DeLorme InReach that uses 24/7 GPS technology to track you. But then again, Spot and InReach are not free by a long shot.

Re: Trip Tracking device

I have used Glympse for about a year now and have had a very good experience with this app. I have it on my iPhone and I suspect that it is available for Android phones as well.

Re: Trip Tracking device

Glympse is a wonderful app that allows you to include as many as you like to see where you are. It is built into the Verizon texting app which means it is a simple text message.

Re: Trip Tracking device

I use "Where's My Droid" with a keyword that someone can text (to me) to locate my phone. For example, the key word might be "FindBob". I would see their text to me, and it would then respond to them (which I also see in my text stream) with a link that will open in Google Maps. That's an app I have anyway in case I lose my phone, and I just use it for showing anyone who knows my keyword where I am. Side benefit is that I know they are looking for me and where I was at that time. Like the other smartphone apps, if I am in an area with no service, it will only show the last known location. No cost to use the capability, though.
