K1200 Ignition/Power Remains On

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and would appreciate a little help with my 2006 K1200. I purchased the bike last month, knowing the clutch would need to be replaced, and performed the repair on my own. I followed an online tutorial and things were going well with the clutch swap until the motorcycle electronics briefly powered on, even though the key was in the off position, while the transmission was being lowered. I continued with the rebuild and this happened a second time as I was reassembling the bike; while installing the fuel tank, the bike powered up and smoke rose from the front of the fuel tank. After this event, the bike perpetually receives power. I am sure a number of things could have gone wrong, but what seems most likely? I appreciate any help on this.

Update: The electronic stand does not work, and the engine will not roll over. I am sure there is a short in the system but I don't know where to begin looking.

good place to start would be under the fuel tank that is where the computer is and smoke came from, and for goodness sake disconnect the bloody battery. that's is what you should have done in the first place....

Yes always disconnect the battery before any major tear down. Now to fix it. You will have to pull the tupperware back off and remove the fuel tank I suspect a pinched and now shorted wire in the harness to the ignition switch. Just start peeling back the sheathing on the harness and work your way down from the switch until you find the melted wires. Then pull them apart and tape them up well and you should be OK.

Oh I know. I won’t be making that mistake again, that’s for sure. I tore the bike down and examined the wires near the ecu, but everything looks pristine so far, no burnt insulation. I will trace the wires from the ignition down and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the responses 🙂

Update: The wiring harness was completely fried directly under the ECU. I spent the weekend replacing the main harness, which fixed things for the most part. I started a new thread for the novel issues the bike is having. Thanks again
