Cruise Control Covered under Extended Warranty?

Has anyone had their cruise control clutch switch replaced under an extended warranty?

I took my 2000 LT to my BMW dealer last week with a non-functioning cruise control. Under my Interstate extended warranty 'Electrical Components', I fully expected it would be covered under the 'manually operated switches' clause.

Seems Interstate disagrees. The service rep just kept quoting me, 'if it's not listed it's not covered'. Seems the BMW mechanic referred to the bad part as the cruise control 'servo', which she kept repeating is not specifically named as a covered item.

I'm wondering if anyone with Interstate or Pinnacle as has had this repair covered? (I'm looking at Pinnacle's coverage flyer and it reads like the exact same language my Interstate contract.)

The bad part was '61312305994 Clutch Switch C/C'.

I have Pinnacle and under COVERED COMPONENTS:

#9 ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS: Alternator;starter;manually operrated switches;coils;rectifiers;magneto;voltage regulator;electronic ignition control modules;electronic fuel injection control module and sensors;wiring harness;and cooling fan motor.
#12 TOURING BIKES: Digital dash components;control cables;factory installed sound system (excluding speakers).

I have their full package which includes about everything. I am sure all electrical switches are covered. The cost was about $1200.00.

pinnacle covered mine, but I had to argue with them for about 3 days, before they did it, I suppose it depends on what plan you have, also helps if your dealer backs you up

I have a 2000 as well. My CC stopped engaging a few years back and after going through the diagnostic in the FAQ section of this site, I narrowed it down to the left bar-mounted switch. All I did was spray some no residue contact cleaner in there while working it back and forth really good. You wouldn't believe the gunk flowing out of there. Did a thorough flushing and it has worked beautifully since. Worth a try.

If it really is the clutch switch, make sure it isn't just an adjustment. You can push forward on the lever while going through the diagnosic and see if it checks out. Sometimes its just a bit snug and the switch isn't really bad at all.

What was your argument?

I'm gettting a cold shoulder to my claim the crusie control is covered under electronics as a manually operated switch.

My dealer has worked with Pinnacle, but never with Interstate. They were treated with the same icy response I received. 'Not listed, not covered.'

I wonder if there are state laws that help out with warranty claims.

Do you recall what kind (make/model) of cleaner you used?

I use the "QD" contact cleaner from CRC. But any plastic-safe, quick evap brand will do. Make sure you test it on plastic in an unconspicous place with a q-tip etc.

Attorney time

Mark, It sounds like you need to tell Interstate that if they're not going to honor the warranty that you paid for, Then you'll need to be getting your attorney involved. That's bad faith man.

That will usually shake them loose..

That's a bunch of crap to spend good money on a warranty and then not have it cover things....

I'd let the state AGs office know as well. You could also tell them about a whole bunch of folks(us, and I'll spread to other forums) won't use them.
Sounds like there $1200 charge is a ripoff if it doesn't work when you need it!
So it sounds like Pinnacle is the better of the two.

I had to threaten to cancel and get a prorated refund if they did not cover. eventually worked but had to speak to numerous people first. good luck..
I probably will not buy another extended warranty when I buy another bike.

Would you do me a favor and ask Pinnacle if they would cover a bad cc switch?

I might have some leverage if Pinnacle covers it with the same language in their contract.

Unhappy CC Not Covered

Just called Pinnacle and the CC servo switch is NOT covered under their extended warranty policy either.

Guess I'm SOL on warranty coverage and will drop my plans to file a claim with the State Insurance Department.

Must say I'm much more impressed with the Pinnacle customer service rep than the Interstate rep.

Do you have the part number

Where is the switch located. In the handlebars or elsewhere ????

I found a listing for a 61-31-2-305-735 switch, clutch All K12LT..

price was 62.79

If that's not the correct one, let me know and we'll find it and do it ourselves...

Maybe,,,,

A bit......

We also should try to clean/adjust it first. I'm sure the dealer didn't try that did he ???

Really appreciate the offer to help.

Guess I didn't make this clear earlier, but I had already paid the dealer for the part and install. I hoped to get Interstate to pay after they denied the coverage.

I'm not going to fuss too much. Our OKC dealer also installed the Ohin's I bought (through the group buy on that other forum) at basically no additional cost. So, for ~$425 I got the $65 part installed as well as the shocks. I was pretty happy with the dealership. Have you met the mechanic, Sonny Bright? He's a really good guy and fun to chat with.

Next spend is on new tires.

Hope we can go ride as soon as things warm up a bit.
