2005 K1200LT for salvage

The insurance company just totaled my 2005 K1200LT. A great bike with only 36,000 miles on her. I had a front end crash two weeks ago and the damage was just higher than the value of the bike. [Note: I'll post more about the accident at another time]
The front end is damaged, broken forks, broken screen and plastics, etc. But the rest of the bike is in great shape. Engine, transmission, rear, tires, seats, she runs fine, shifts fine, etc. In fact it has a brand new battery and front tire I had just installed for the trip I was on.

It is located in a salvage yard in Greer SC, and the insurance company placed a salvage value at just under $1000.

I'm not interested, but I thought someone on the forum might be. Let me know and I can connect you with the insurance company.

I would be interested looking for a low mileage engine, may be worth it to get the whole bike.

Re: 2005 K1200LT for salvage

John,
I'm not going to buy the bike (as much as I'd like the project, I don't have the space or honestly enough talent) but I will find out from the Insurance Company who to contact to purchase the "remains". Just parting out the leather seat, and some other accessories / parts would recoup the investment. I'll send you information as soon as I have it.

Re: 2005 K1200LT for salvage

Larry,
Thanks for asking. I'll post the entire "story" of the accident next week, but I'm fine. I did flip over the bike and land on the car so it could have been much worse, but I was wearing all the gear on this ride and ended up with just some bruises, a sprained right wrist and a sprained left thumb.

Thanks John,
The only thing I need is an ABS integral pump. Do you know if a '05 will replace a '03?
I am getting conflicting answers from various dealer sites.

Okay Guys,

The contact information for the yard is ...

Copart yard
Phone#864-877-9113

Let me know if anyone purchases her. She was a great bike for the 6 years I was the owner.

BTW, some of the accessories or new parts:

Rick's Custom Leather Seats
BMR Dashboard Shelf
Air Horn
Mick-O-Pegs highway pegs
Fuel Quick Release
Spieglar metal brake lines (fronts are probably damaged)
LED Headlight Bulb
Brand new Front Tire (installed for this ride)
5,000 mile rear tire (should last 12-15k)
Brand new battery

John, if you buy this, I'd like the chance to bid on the seats and maybe the air horn (per my CCR post).

Re: 2005 K1200LT for salvage

Sorry about your crash. Glad you were not injured worse than you described. (Could have been much worse) Since your bike ended up not far from me, I am curious as to just where your accident was. I live north of Greer, SC, and ride mostly in the upstate SC and NC mountains. I once rounded a curve to find some tourists from Florida blocking the road in their SUV with their cameras out snapping pictures of a mama bear and cubs!

It's bad enough that those folks don't know what to do with a hill or curve, but they were in their vehicle, and left me in the road on my bike exposed to the bears! I was on my Honda Cruiser with loud pipes. Thankfully I managed to gather my wits and blast past the bears & idiots without hitting either. (or getting mauled)

Currently, we are getting soaked with rain. Highway 176, (I ride often) between Tryon, NC & Saluda, NC is a mess. Last week, a mudslide killed a woman at her home. Today, a local news crew was killed when a tree fell on their vehicle while they were trying to cover the hazards of these mountain roads. It is imperative that we keep our eyes open, and always when on a bike, try to anticipate the unexpected over the next hill or around the next curve.

Never declare a cherished memory as "the best day of my life"...it will forever diminish the possibility for "Tomorrow" being the "Best Day!"

Re: 2005 K1200LT for salvage

Thanks Chris,

I went to the CoPart site and saw better pictures. Glad you survived that. It ripped the front ball joint right out of the fork bridge and bent the telelever arm. Can't tell if the engine was impacted. I thought it was still in the insurance's hands but it appears to be in a lot for auction. I'll give them a call in the morning and get the whole story.

Re: 2005 K1200LT for salvage

Chris,

I called the yard and only SC dealers can buy from them. If the insurance still has it then you would need to buy it back and then sell it. Kind of a screwy law. Any way please contact your insurance and let me know the status of the bike as CoPart would not divulge the info.

Re: 2005 K1200LT for salvage

Thanks, I was hoping the buy could be made direct from the insurance co. Last time I talked to the yard in Greer they said they can only sell to dealers or agents in SC. But I'll still give it a shot. I don't have a claim on this so if anyone else wants to try be my guest.
