OHLINES OR OTHER SHOCK?

Dint ride the lt much last year as i had a new to r1200gsa that needed 10,000 miles added to its od.... but the other day i hoped on the lt and beside a few other things i think the shocks are played out... I am planning on riding the LT to Desmoines this summer and maybe a few other trips.. so looking at ohlins website your looking at 800+ for a rear shock and $600 for front shock,,, im sure by the time they arrive Ill have $1600 in the set..... so what other option are there??? I cant really imagine selling the bike anytime soon as these bike just dont sell that well.. and i would prefer to keep her as to give her away.. i have a matching trailer that adds more value but also limits the market ... so ill probably have her for a long time...

suggestion on shocks.....please

Hi, if your shocks are not leaking maybe a new set of springs would fix it up. Your springs are probably getting bad. A new set of Hyperpro progressive springs might just fix it right up. I put a set on my 2010 GSA to shorten it 40MM, it did that but they ride nicer that the stock springs did.

EPM High Performance Motorcycle Suspension Sales and Service from EPM Performance Imports lists a set for K 1200 LT `99-'08 front & rear= $ 275.00 . I got the springs I put on my GSA from them, they know there stuff.

Ohlins are famous for racing and thus they are lighter weight and wear out worse than others. I ran Ohlins for 60 K and I am now running Wilbers (with ESA on the rear) but the Yacugar is also more robust with a shaft diameter twice what Ohlins has. Still they are ALL on a 30,000 mile rebuild cycle recommendation and the Ohlins were getting expensive to rebuild with the number of bits replaced.

I have a set of OEM shocks sitting in the garage from my '07LT with about 30,000 miles on them that I'd let go for $30 plus shipping. They were perfectly good, but I replaced them with Yacugar shocks from Ted's Beemer Shop. Once on, I really didn't notice any improvement in ride.

thanks for the input ill check al these out... I reached up under the front forks yesterday to show a guy where to tie down his goldwing and my hand came back with light oil on it.... so im guessing the forks are leaking too...

Why not go back with stock? Less $$$.

I appreciate JNW003's opinion that it wasn't "magical" transformation. I may have to reach out to him about his old ones. 50k less than the rear on mine.

My front shock failed and after looking at the options, I went with back with stock. Less $$.

I bought the '91 with an Ohlins on it, doesn't really feel any different than the stock shock on the '85. As a matter of fact, the adjustment reservoir location caused my pants leg to get caught a couple of times, so it is now under the seat.

The internals on your shocks are toast. EMP in NJ or maybe a local shock store can rebuild them. Generally about 400$. Takes a lot to wear out a spring. Generally what causes spring trouble is too many beers and the weight gain.

yacugar similarly priced maybe a little higher than wilbers

WOW, those have really climbed in price. IIRC, the front when I did it was ~$400, the rear IIRC was ~$800. Stock was several $100 less than the aftermarket.

Might want to check out https://re-psycle.com/ as PMitchell did in the other suspension thread or go with JNW003's 30k set.

I paid $1,467 in June 2014, for the front and rear Yacugars, which included $249 for a preload adjustment charge. Ted waived shipping due to a delay in getting them to me.

Guys can argue about this shock or that shock, how robust, how reactive, how adjustable, etc. But shock springs are a different matter. They are clearly more measurable. When I replace my rear I'll get a HyperPro from Klaus at EPM Performance. All I have to do is answer a few questions (including weighing the bike front and rear) and Klaus does the rest. And, the big difference here, is the progressive spring used by Hyperpro, mentioned above by Patric. The progressive spring gives you a nice plush ride over ordinary surfaces but when you hit the whoop-de-doos the spring gets stiff and you have no worries about bottoming out. May not be right for you, but the way I'm gonna use this bike a progressive is the right spring for me.

I changed my stockers at 19K and went with Ohlins and although it is a little higher than it was stock I would never go back. The stockers would weave a little in a high speed sweeper and would touch the skid plate on speed bumps, now no problem and the bike is solid in high speed sweepers and has a nice tight but comfy ride.
