Question Getting the LT ready for the road

My LT hasn't been running very good probably because it's been sitting for a couple of years. I use to run it at least once every couple of weeks but been busy with other things so it sat for a couple of years. Last time I tried to start it the battery was dead so in went a new battery but I forgot to do the TPS reset and tried to start it, it would barely idle then die. I did the reset a few times because it didn't seem to do anything. I have her torn down to the motor but i have some questions. With the E-10 gas in there do you think it has gone bad and plugged up the system? I will flush the tank and replace the fuel filters but is there anything I should do to the injectors? I have also removed the radio and CD unit and have another question when i removed the CD I had to unplug a lot of connections from under the dash (3 rectangle plugs) can I leave these vacant?

I have never found the TPS reset procedure very useful either. What has always worked for me is getting out and riding. Typically after 2-3 rides of 20 or so miles each, the ECU gets itself recalibrated.

I would drain the old gas. Change the fuel filter. Fill with fresh gas, preferably pure gas, and ride it. If it still runs poorly after 50 miles or so, then I would take a more aggressive approach.

It ran great before when i started it every couple of weeks but now I can't ride it, it won't make it out of the driveway, will barely idle and if you give it gas it dies. I have it torn down to the motor now, will drain the gas and change the filter. I was wondering about the injectors being plugged from the bad gas or anything else that the gas woulds effect. I need to know about the three plugs under the left side of the stingray that the CD/radio system plugs into, can I just leave those open and not effect any other operations.

It is possible the injectors are plugged, but they tolerate bad gas better than carburetors. The gas in the injector isn't exposed to air and air is partly what accelerates the spoiling of E10. I would clean the tank and fuel lines, add fresh gas with a dose of Techron and give it a try. I believe the stingray connections can be left disconnected for a test run.

I wouldn't even run a lawn mower on E10 gas. The only thing you should put in an LT is premium high octane.
E10 is a con, yes it's cheaper but you get crop mileage and it's bad for your fuel system.

For some, real gas is very hard to come by so there is little choice but to run the E10. I have retrofitted all the fuel rubber components to more tolerant lines and O-rings so I have little worry about it but I still run only premium in my baby even though it is an earlier 01 before the HP and compression boost. I could probably get away with the mid grade but why risk it.

Many of us have no choice. E10 is prevalent throughout the US. The PureGas app helps, but when traveling you don't always have the luxury of finding real gas. I used to have only one station with 30 mikes of me that sold pure gas. Thankfully a new Sunoco opened recently about 10 miles away and they have ethanol-free premium, but at nearly $4/gallon.

I run 100LL in my lawnmowers and chainsaw and weed trimmers.

While you have it broke down i would recommend sending your injectors into MR. INJECTOR. It was quick and cost about $70. Far cheaper than new.

Mr. Injector might not be a bad idea with it sitting for an extended period of years with stale E10. You would at least know if they were contributing to the current issue. I am a happy customer of Mr. Injector and also recommend his service. Less than the cost of a single new injector and perform like new.

Thanks again! Going to send them in next week. Another question I have, can we get the final drive rebuilt with a low gear ratio? First gear is so high and starting on a hill in traffic makes you feel like your going to fry the clutch!

It is possible but not from BMW direct. There are some ring/pinion gear sets from other models of BMW that can be installed in the rear drive case for an LT but not all of them are designed to handle the load of an LT. I know a guy that has experimented with other ratios. Stock is 2.62 and I am running a 2.82 right now. It makes starting out two up, pulling a trailer a bit easier but it is not enough to eliminate the dreaded up hill start. That would take a significantly lower ratio which would kill your top end and gas mileage.

I ran a 3.09 gear ratio this past weekend riding from the Iron Horse Lodge. I rode a total of 738.8 miles. My average fuel mileage was 45.8. The lowest was 44.8 & the highest was 47.0. Following you on Friday John I got 45.3.

What ratio would you suggest? I like to travel at between 75-85mph or 4-5k rpm. I ride mostly one up, no trailer. Bike is an 05'. Thats great mpg for a lower ratio like that.

Another question I am going to pull the injectors and send them to get cleaned, is there a trick to get them out or is it like it looks pull the fuel rail then take off the electrical connection then how does the injector come out?

It's been awhile since I've paid any attention to RPM's since I've been using different gear ratios. I have a day long ride this coming Sat. & I'll pay more attention to the RPM's. It will be with a 3.09 ratio.

There is a slide on metal clip that holds each one on the fuel rail. Once you pop those they just pull out. Tug with a little rotation as those o-rings have been in there a long time. Be sure and lightly oil them when you get them back for easy insertion. Make sure the connectors are LOCKED on, give them a gentle tug to be sure or you will have grief.
