Can using the reverse once a day have bad effect on your starter. Wear it out sooner? 07 LT Jim

Re: reverse

Well, they installed it to be used, so I'd guess no. Plus, it uses the starter switch, but I'm not at all sure the starter motor itself gets engaged. I hear the engine note change, but I don't hear a starter whine, and of course the engine is already running. I could be WAY off on all of these thoughts, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Re: reverse

It does indeed use the starter motor to reverse the bike. It is a far lighter load than cranking the engine so wear should be less on the brushes but it can't help but cause some wear. The brushes are pretty thick so it is designed to be used. Eventually, it will fail but I wouldn't be worried about using it once a day unless you back it up 50 feet or so. I try not to use mine on surfaces that I can push back with my feet though. It is a pain to get to and replace/service.

Re: reverse

But then it is like "don't use the starter to start the bike because it will wear it out".

Point of reference I have 103 K on my 05 and I use reverse a lot. I had the transmission out for a bearing change and opened the starter up while the bike was apart. I replaced the front bearing (used during starting) as it was dry but smooth. The rear bearing (used during reverse) was perfect. Oh and the total brush length was 9 mm (worn down from 12 mm when new.

Use reverse whenever you need it, the starter will last a long time.
