Knee Replacement

Well Gentleman. I had my knee replacment surgery Monday. All went well. I came home today from the hospital. Started therapy yesterday. OH MAN THEY BEAT ME UP..I never saw grown men, 2 of them in Therapy with me both at least @ 6'2 270 + wincing in pain. They were not alone as I just about had tears running down my face also. Especially when they worked my leg to get a 90 bend back. Never had I felt such pain. The surgery is not bad. It's the physical therapy that is brutal. But I remind myself that pain is only temporary and all will be normal with hard work.

Re: Knee Replacement

Keep a stiff upper lip James. My father went through this as well as my mother twice and I have no doubt that I will also go through it as my knees are not in very good shape. At present I can only imagine what it feels like but my dad told me of when he broke his arm and they had to set it to place in a cast. Two grown men held him while the doctor pulled on his arm to align the bones. He said that was all bad enough right up to the point where the doctor then bent his wrist down so it would all stay in place. That was about when he almost passed out.

It will get better. Heal quickly so you can get back on the bike.

Re: Knee Replacement

Take your pain meds before PT. It will help you get better range of motion. This is from first had experience. Also if you are not lean, shed some weight. It will take a lot of stress off of your joint. Have someone close watch you walk and let them correct any limp or change in your gate. It's amplified in your hip and will lead to future problems.. Water therapy is also a way to get back your motion without too much stress.

Over a 2 year period of time, 18 years ago, I had 5 operations on my knee from a trauma injury and the above made a big difference in my recovery. I was told that in 5 years after my accident, I'd probably need a knee replacement. I have very little discomfort and I am still on my natural knee. The PT makes the difference.

Re: Knee Replacement

James,
Had a full replacement in November of 2010. I went back to work on January 2nd and rode with two friends to Nova Scotia that spring.

Work with your therapist. Sounds like the Drill Sargent type which is good (believe it or not). Work hard and keep flexing.

My therapist got upset with me after I told her that I got on the LT in late December. Told her I wasn't going to ride but wanted to see how much more I had to flex before I was comfortable.

I don't even think about it until I remember that I can't go through the magnetometer at the airport and require the scan!

Re: Knee Replacement

James;

Had a full knee done in 2005 (45 yrs young), back to work in 2 weeks. the PT is a killer. My wife had a partial 2 weeks ago, already at work.
2 things. if they gave you an ice machine for your knee USE IT, it is your life saver. and do all the stretches you can, under your desk, on your bike, everywhere you can. I have full range, way past 90 deg. and absolutely the best thing I ever did.
I still remember asking the dr how hard I could push, his words,"if you can take the pain, do it". Your not going to hurt the knee.
And amazingly the dr, that did my wife knee, the same words exact words.
Good luck, all will be good. a little pain now and YEARS without pain.

Re: Knee Replacement

Thanks to all that replied. Been at PT for 3 days now. From day 1. I did extra reps of chosen exercises. Ones that weren't absolute agony. But. Did do extra reps of some of those to. Point is. I do go the extra mile when i can. But not to the point where it will set me back. Gonna be a loooong road.

Ice machine? No. They didn't. Icing down is the one big problem i do have. I'm using a big freeze gel pack and bags of frozen veggies.

Re: Knee Replacement

I mix my own.... Use heavy duty freezer bag 1/2 rubbing alcohol and 1/2 water. Double bag..... It turns into a semi hard slurry that easily molds to your knee. Apply and then wrap with a towel to get good contact for about 15 minutes on.. repeat several times a day and right after PT or exercise.

Re: Knee Replacement

Well Paul. I do heavy industrial plant Maintenance. So there's no way I can go back without being 100% Besides. We have good insurance that will allow up to 6 months if need be. Kinda like a supplemental insurance similar to Aflac. Which is great. It saves alot of heartache worrying how bills will get paid so I can put full time on healing and getting back to work.

Re: Knee Replacement

Well I can't add much to all the above other than to say that we have lots of experience with joint replacement surgery, not me but my wife. She has had 2 knees, 1 shoulder and 3 hips (fell and destroyed the supporting bone on one side so they played Humpty Dumpty and and put all the pieces back together. Never regained full capability but does well and walks with a cane. Anyway, folks mentioned ice as a pain relief and helps to control swelling. I would ask about an ice machine as it makes everything so much more convenient. I'm thinking your insurance should cover the rental expense, heck, even Medicare covered it. Newer ones come with a refrigeration unit. Just wrap the joint, plug it in and relax. Best of luck with your recovery.

Re: Knee Replacement

My mother lives out in horse / cow country. Her neighbor needed knee replacement on both knees. After the Dr. told him what the rehab was going to be and how long he decided to have them both done at the same time.He had to convince the Dr. he could handle it and did. It worked out and he is back on the Farmall. Tough farmers.
