Best and Worst thing about the LT

Just getting back on an LT and it is amazing how it brings back so many good feelings so I just thought I would get your thoughts on your most and least favorite part about the bike. Here are mine:

Best - The ride is so smooth and comfortable
- It has all the creature comforts you will ever need in a motorcycle
- Big but still sporty
- Looks are second to none
- Remove the trunk and you have a whole different bike
- EHCS
- Reverse gear
- Classic yet up to date
- This forum is there for you
- Easy to maintain once you get to know the bike

Worst - Slow speed handling needs getting used to
- Maintenance takes too much time
- Seat comfort
- Sensitive brakes
- Top heavy

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

BEST
* Easily best looking tourer (or sport tourer) out there.
* EHCS
* The LT will not be seen at every other stop light like so many other popular bikes.
* Smooth ride with superior handling (great lean capability)
* Extremely comfortable, especially to pillion.

WORST
* The one headlight front end doesn't match the beauty of the rest of bike.
* A bit light on acceleration.
* You have to really focus at slow speeds (parking lots, garages) to not have an "incident".
* Does not retain value. Good luck in coming close to getting what she is worth if you sell her. Great for buyers!
* For those that aren't strictly bluetooth, it is very difficult to repair/replace stereo.

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

BEST
* Very attractive flashy bike. Timeless design. Im not into chrome but Ill leave it on this bike.
* I love the brakes (especially since I fixed mine). The power brakes took getting used to but now it spoils me.
* I like its rarity. RTs are great bikes, but common.
* I love the creature comforts - adjustable windscreen, elec. cruise, heated seats/grips etc.
* Easy to ride on the highway, where its meant to be.
* Reverse gear - nuf said

WORST
* Headlight is ugly, dated looking and poor lighting
* Low speeds are not its forte (pronounced "fort!!")
* Tupperware is just a big giant pain in the a$$ to remove and for no reason. The 1600GTL has slimmer fairings
Just getting back on an LT and it is amazing how it brings back so many good feelings so I just thought I would get your thoughts on your most and least favorite part about the bike. Here are mine:
*Filling the bike with oil is ridiculously difficult. Also remedied in the 1600GTL.
*I dislike the handlebars for a variety of reasons.
* OEM mirrors are almost useless. K12RS mirrors are the perfect fix.

I would agree on all poiints. But not the EHCS. I have an 04 and have a manual center stand(less to go wrong). And the seat isn't the best. The stupid servo brakes crap. Mine just failed. So bypass will happen. I hated them anyway. But that bike has so much character . The look is timeless.

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

You don't think the EHCS is the coolest of all the creature comforts and one of the items that make the LT more enjoyable? It's probably how they came up with the model name "LT" which stands for Lift That.

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

Like (the short list):
Smooth on the Freeway
Smooth at high speeds with no vibrations
Comfort for long stretches of riding
Decent gas mileage
Loves the curves
Protection from rain, as long as going 35mph or faster
Big gas tank to get more miles before refueling
Drop a gear and pass without a problem
Lots of room for stuff
Built in heat
Cruise
ABS Brakes

Dislike:
So smooth, I almost feel disconnected to the road (This was hard to get used to)
Too much wind protection in the hot summer months
Finding the right windshield height to lessen noise (My helmet is actually quieter with less vibration without a windshield BUT windshield up means gas mileage down)
Fairing removal for many tasks...ugh...thank the maker for screw guns
Oil changes...thank you K&N for an easy solution

As far as slow speed moves, yes it takes time to get used to but once you do, it isn't really a problem. Look where you want to go and guide the bike. Forget muscling it.

Curious, and probably should know, but what is KLN in regards to oil changes?

Cool Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

Mine is a '99 --

Best :
1. no EHCS, at 56 y.o. if I can't put her on center stand, then time to quit riding
2. if ABS craps out, still got brakes
3. Sport bike handling - it's got more balls than I do in the twisties
4. Passing gear on freeway
5. Cruise control and adjustable windscreen
6. Rain protection -- good in hail too
7. This forum is priceless
8. Every time I ride, I forget about my old Valkyrie

Worst:
1. Single obsolete headlight - thus, the need for xtra halogens
2. Low speed maneuvers - only dropped once
3. Tupperware removal & gas tank removal to access the bloomin' air filter
4. Maintenance woes & worries
5. Every time I work on it, I remember my old Valkyrie

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

Oh. Almost forgot what the LT does better than any other bike. WEATHER PROTECTION. With a good aftermarket windshield. Nothing protects like a LT.

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

I would not have an LT today if i would not have discovered this forum! Part of the enjoyment of ownership is being able to do your own maintenance and repairs that the great people on this forum allows you to do. So the best thing about the LT is the BMWLT!

My old R1100RT kept me completely dry even in severe rain. My LT makes an effort to get me wet.

Re: Best and Worst thing about the LT

Hate the headlight as well..

I have 2004 RT as well as a 2000LT and often wondered about attempting to fit the RT headlight assembly, which I love, to the LT.
