immobilizer won't turn off

The wife and I went for a ride then parked our 2002 K1200LT (61K) in the garage after running fine. When I tried to restart it next time it would crank fine but not fire. A good friend and 40+ year MC (not BMW) mechanic diagnosed fuel pump or pump relay over the phone, but when he came out noticed the immobilizer light was lit. The remote will not turn it off, nor does a blink pattern indicate it needs to be reset. Ideas on how to deactivate it? He also jumped power to the fuel pump, which then ran fine, but still the bike wouldn't fire.

Does the immobilizer turn off both fuel pump and ignition? Is it feasible to just remove it to get the bike to run? The service manual (CD) wasn't clear where it's located, were they a stock factory item or a dealer-installed accessory, and where is the control unit found?

Thanks much for any info or ideas!

Re: immobilizer won't turn off

The immobilizer is part of the alarm and will not even let the starter engage.. So if you can crank but no fire I would look into the tank for a popped or split hose. With the age of the bike and sudden appearance of the issue that is where my money is. If you open the gas cap and turn on the key you should not see a lot of movement in the fuel (cycle the kill switch to activate the pump for a few seconds and watch for movement (use a good flash light).

But the light should not be on at all. Try setting the alarm then un-setting it (ribbed then smooth button on the FOB). But again immobilizer will not even let her crank.

Re: immobilizer won't turn off

I got some more clarification from my mechanic friend-There is no power going to the fuel pump, but he was able to jump power to it and get it to run. However, even with the pump running with the jumper, the bike wouldn't fire at all. Also, perhaps coincidentally, the key fobs will not turn the immobilizer on or off; could fuel pump, ignition, and immobilizer all be affected by the same electrical issue?

Re: immobilizer won't turn off

With the pump running and no fire, it is likely a hose in the fuel tank. With the key on the pump will only run for a second or two then shut off until the bike is running. Hoses are #3 (most likely split) or #8.

Re: immobilizer won't turn off

We eventually traced the problem to mouse-chewed wires under the top case. There was a sizeable mouse nest there containing bits of chewed wire insulation, and several bare/ chewed in half wires. After soldering in new wires ( and reassembling as necessary) the bike started immediately. Just my good luck I guess that it decided to conk out in my garage rather than in the middle of nowhere!

Re: immobilizer won't turn off

I really hate those little buggers. I have not had any issues but I have helped fix many that have had nests in them. Glad you got the bike going again. Now get a big cat for the garage!
