Checking engine oil

Ok, you would think any idiot could check his engine oil, but I'm not just any idiot.

I've always tried to check my oil with the bike on the sidestand. I say tried, because I could never see anything in the sight glass. I even stopped by the dealer once and had them check it. The lady who sold me the bike looked at it and said "It's fine." I still couldn't see anything.

Then this morning I put the bike on the center stand, and by George, THERE it is. Right dead center in the sight glass.

I checked my owners manual and it says on the center stand the top of the glass if Max, and the bottom of the glass is Min.

Am I correct in thinking the middle of the glass is "normal?" Or do I need to add some?

I think the oil should be at the top of the sight glass when the bike is on the center stand.

If the bike is on the side stand the middle of the sight glass would be full.

Depending on how much longer you have until you change the oil, I would not worry about, but keep a eye on it. When I change my oil, I put exactly 3-1/2 quarts in. I believe that the oil level is between the top of the sight glass and center of the sight glass. With yours being in the middle of the sight glass, you are probably running at 3 quarts instead of the 3.7 the LT calls for.

Oil level

I asked the same question to the local dealer recently and was told that they always put in 4 quarts on the LT.

4 quarts is a tad too much!

Many have advised that it is wiser to run a little low on oil rather than too much. 3.5 quarts is about right, IMHO.

And Wayne, I have a daughter in college in Virginia and a beach house in SC and I must tell you that Frederickburg is very nice but that stretch of I-95 between DC and Richmond near you is the WORLD"S worst!

Good luck with your LT. You'll love it!

South of the Rappahanock, in what I like to refer to as "free Virginia," (North of the river is "Occupied Virginia) isn't too bad. Holiday weekends and such can be, but nothing like up "nawth."

I commute to Richmond about every day, but I normally take RT-1 down to Ashland, then take 95 across the James River.

I lived in the Richmond area all my life, except for the last three years. I just moved up here, and didn't think I'd like it, but was surprised to find I do.

Opps. Can't have that.

Dino or Synthetic?

Is Amsoil any good?

Does brand name really matter?

Those should jump start it again.

I thought Microsoft was going to own the world... and they are so slick that selling oil would would fit right in their business practices. Let's just hope they won't get into the tires business with the same slickness...
