Sprag Clutch Blues.

As the title suggests my sprag clutch isn't engaging. I've already tried rislone, as well as removing the crank case cover and cleaning the assembly with carb and choke cleaner once and kroil another time. I've rocked it backwards in gear and tried starting to no avail. Next step is replace!

Questions:
1) I just replaced the clutch last year so I know what I'm in for but would it be easier to pull the engine instead?
2) What is the parts list for sprag clutch replacement?
3) Since I just replaced my clutch are there any parts that I won't need i.e. Rear main seal, crank nut, flywheel bolts?
4) Is it necessary to replace the entire sprag clutch basket, or could I just replace the sprag wheel with the teeth (term?)?

Thank you!

Re: Sprag Clutch Blues.

Actually it will clean up with gunk carb cleaner. I had one that was really gummed up (from a dead engine with 100K on it) and an over night soaking made it look new. They do not wear out they just get dirty. Before you give up get some Gunk brand Carb cleaner and douse it liberally with it.

But if you do go in you will need everything to replace as you did for the clutch job except the main seal. Housing nut and washer - o ring, housing bolts. You can drop both the engine and transmission together straight down and just work it off the bike.

Thanks for the reply jzeiler. I'll definitely try the gunk. It's going to be a bit before I have time but I'll avoid the job if at all possible! Thanks again

Re: Sprag Clutch Blues.

The stuff I used was in a gallon can with a dipping basket. May be worth your while to get that and find a way to squirt is into the three holes in the side of the sprag clutch.

Maybe get a large tank and soak the entire engine overnight. Might be less work than disassembly. Ok, I am joking here!
